If you ask me, Susan Boyle is definitely "Iconic" and inspirational too.  Every time a talent show comes on TV,  the hosts/judges are always looking for another Susan Boyle.  They can look all they want, because there is no one like Susan Boyle.  Susan Boyle is unique, the original one and only!

Has Susan Boyle Achieved Iconic Status?

Travelling recently on a mass transit in Bangkok, I saw a young man listening and watching intensely something on his iPhone, so out of curiosity I asked what he was watching. He replied that it was the YouTube video of Susan Boyle’s audition in 2009 in the TV program, Britain’s Got Talent. He explained that he watched that video at least once a month because he found it inspirational; it empowers him to dream that he too has a chance for stardom one day – somehow. Susan Boyle is now an iconic figure, he added. That got me thinking about Susan Boyle and the label “iconic”.

The story of Susan Boyle

susan-boyle-after
The story of Boyle is well known. She was born in 1961 in Blackburn, Scotland, the youngest of nine children, and was reported to have learning disability. Boyle had some voice coaching, and prior to that audition she used to sing at church choirs and in karaoke performances. Her first public appearance on the talent show fired public imagination when her modest stage introduction and thick speaking accent left the audience, viewers and judges unprepared for the power and expression of her mezzo-soprano voice rendering the song “I Dreamed a Dream”. Within nine days of that appearance, YouTube videos of Boyle had been watched over 100 million times. But has Boyle become an iconic figure?
marilynmonroeThe term Iconic has been used to describe such diverse women as Marilyn Monroe, Princess Diana, Eva Peron and Mother Teresa. In its original meaning, an icon is a religious work of art, mainly from Eastern Christianity. Modern meaning of the word implies that the person or thing is representative of something bigger than herself/itself. However, so many people and things are now described as “iconic” that the term has become debased. For example, in a recent email from Louis Vuitton, I learnt that their Alma handbag is “iconic” but I am not sure why that is so. Perhaps they mean that the handbag is popular, has been around for some time and is well recognized as one of their expensive products?

Paving the way for people to dream

Despite coming second in the contest, Boyle has attained fame, with new recording and performances all over the world and a growing bank account to show for it. She even had a makeover for her photos in fashion magazines. A musical has been made of her life and no doubt there will be a movie on it as well. Her name is recognized the world over. She represents something bigger than herself – she shows up our prejudices based on appearance and age.   Importantly, she gives hope to millions of people and paves the way for them to dream, even when they don’t know how their dream could ever come true. On balance, I would not disagree with the young man’s description of Boyle as an iconic figure.

Susan Boyle sparks support for Five Sisters zoo

Published on 04/05/2013 12:00
FURTHER supporters of the fire-hit Five Sisters Zoo have come forward following Susan Boyle’s announcement of her intention to provide a “substantial donation”.
Employees of The Centre, Livingston, will be aiding in the building of temporary homes for the surviving otter and two meerkats whose enclosures were destroyed in the recent devastating blaze.
The Centre has also donated huts to house the animals in while the work is going on. The project is part of a year-long partnership between the shopping centre and the popular zoo.
James Bailey, director of The Centre, said: “Everyone in the town was deeply saddened by the terrible fire at the Five Sisters Zoo.
“However, it has spurred a real sense of community spirit. We’re delighted to be making this small contribution and look forward to continuing to support the team at the zoo throughout the next year.”
Ms Boyle visited the West Calder attraction last week.

Susan Boyle Gets a Movie Role

Susan Boyle, the Scottish singer with the big voice who enjoyed a period of international fame in 2009 after appearing on a British talent show, has landed a part in a Christmas movie, Reuters reported.
Ms. Boyle, 51, will appear in “The Christmas Candle,” a film based on the novella by Max Lucado about a magic candle that changes life for people at the turn of the 20th century in a dull village with a skeptical minister. The producers did not say what part Ms. Boyle would play, or whether she would sing. Samantha Barks, Hans Matheson and Lesley Manville also appear in the film, which began production this week on the Isle of Man.
“Everyone on set is a delight to work with and it’s a fantastic experience to be part of the team,” Ms. Boyle said in a statement. She added, “I’m really enjoying getting dressed in the period costumes and stepping back in time and although it’s very cold filming on location, I’m wearing long johns under my bustle.”
Ms. Boyle, whose unassuming looks belie a powerful mezzo-soprano voice, gained international attention after appearing on the variety show “Britain’s Got Talent” and performing a soaring rendition of “I Dreamed a Dream” from the musical “Les Misérables.” Her first album, of the same name, was one of the best-selling records ever recorded in Britain and reached the top of the charts on both sides of the Atlantic. Since then she has released two more studio albums and a live compilation

Poem about Susan ~ Poster by Canadian Bill of the Forum.

This poem was written for and about Susan by a relative of a member of the Forum. The image in the picture is Susan's mother Bridget, who always encouraged Susan in her singing. After her mother's death, Susan found her own courage and entered Britain's Got Talent to make her mother proud of her. The rest is history.

Susan has a copy of this.

Singing sensation Susan Boyle is backing the campaign to rebuild the Five Sisters Zoo.
Staff at the popular Polbeth facility were delighted when the superstar popped in to see them last Friday.
The Blackburn songstress had been saddened after a blaze killed many species in the zoo’s tropical house on April 14.
And she handed over a donation to the Five Sisters Zoo Fire Fund which will be used to help restore the visitor attraction.
The zoo’s Lesley Coupar said: “We were delighted to see Susan at the zoo and it was a complete surprise.
“She handed over a generous donation which we are so grateful for. It’s amazing to get the support of someone who is so well-known and loved worldwide.”

Susan's picture in Waterstone...

In Waterstones Piccadilly in London there is now a photo of Susan taken during the 2010 book signing.

My friend Carolyn Lawrence wrote: If you go in towards the main stairs by the lift you see some portraits on the wall on the Ground Floor. Turning right as you go up the stairs on the facing wall is SuBo and YOU as you reach first floor!
My Dutch nephew discovered it casually when visiting London (first photo).
For the moment at least it seems to be a permanent exhibition.

Susan is looking at a pic of Luzzie's statue I gave her, the same moment that was used for the intro video of the musical.

Here a video of the same moment,at :20 you can see Susan laughing over the picture I gave her... it was a funny photocomposition of herself and the statue.

Susan Boyle supports fire-ravaged local zoo

Scottish singer SUSAN BOYLE stunned staff at a small zoo last week (ends28Apr13) when she paid an impromptu visit to hand over a donation after one of its buildings was destroyed by a blaze.

The Scot toured the Five Sisters Zoo in West Lothian, close to her home in the town of Blackburn, on Friday (26Apr13) to see the damage caused to the tropical house when fire ripped through the building last month (Apr13).
She also handed a donation to staff to help with the rebuilding operation.
The animal sanctuary's head of marketing, Lesley Cooper, says, "We are so grateful for her donation. It's amazing to get the support of someone who is so well-known and loved worldwide."

Susan Boyle gives a generous donation to a West Lothian zoo devastated by fire last month

By Guest

The Britain’s Got Talent star visited Five Sisters Zoo in Polbeth, West Lothian, near her Blackburn home, on Friday and left a generous donation.
SuBo also looked in on some of the zoo’s surviving animals, and was said to be particularly impressed with the lemurs.
"She hadn't been to the zoo before but she had a quick wander around. and she promised to come back in the summer.
“She hadn’t been to the zoo before but she had a quick wander around. and she promised to come back in the summer.

A fund to support the family-run zoo now stands at more than £42,500, and its owners say they are overwhelmed by the support they are receiving.
The fire completely gutted the zoo’s tropical house and all the animals of 48 different species inside died and others were caught as the smoke and flames spread.
Lesley Coupar of the zoo’s marketing department, said: “She just popped in very briefly, I think she’s recording a re album in Glasgow but she took time out her shedule to visit us.
“She hadn’t been to the zoo before but she had a quick wander around. and she promised to come back in the summer.
“She’s an animal lover – she certainly liked the lemurs. We know she has cats but she didn’t have time to see our wildcats.”
SuBo left a “generous” donation after last Friday’s visit, Ms Coupar said.
Zoo owners Brian and  Shirley Curran, who opened the not-for-profit zoo in 2005, are determined to replace and improve on the enclosures they lost.
The couple were woken at around 4am  on 14 April to find the tropical house ablaze, and the flames began to spread to other enclosures.
All but two of the zoo’s meerkats died in the fire, and one of the zoo’s otters also died.
Shirley said: “It’s hard to believe it’s been two weeks since the fire.
“So muchhas happened then and we’ve been inundated with offers of help and support.
“I think we were both in a daze at the start and struggled to come to terms with the enormity of what had happened to us.
“Emotionally it was hard for us al as well.
“Obviously all the staff were deeply affected by what happened.
“There is a more positive outlook for the future now. People are still donating to the fire fund and things with the insurance company are looking more positive as well but we still don’t know when there will be a settlement.
“We are looking at costs for new replacement buildings and hopefully in the next couple of weeks we will be able to show people what we intend to do.”
Brian said two dwarf crocodiles, a female otter and two meerkats who survived the blaze would soon be well enough to go on public display again.
He said: “We are hoping to get them back out in the next week or so. The quicker the better as it will be good to get them out their small cages and into the sunshine again.
“We’re also trying to search for a new mate for the otter. They are sociable animals and like company.”
The zoo is now re-open to the public with reduced admission prices.
