Thousands flock to Stirling Castle for Hogmanay

More than 5000 tickets were sold as Stirling partied its way into 2013 with a high-octane Hogmanay bash at the Castle.
Scottish music icons The Proclaimers headlined in the lead-up to the bells, which were brought in with a traditionally rousing rendition of ‘Auld Lang Syne’ and a spectacular firework display above Stirling Castle Esplanade.
Craig and Charlie Reid then took to the stage once more for an encore – after joking with Real Radio compere Steve McKenna that they were “contractually obliged” to do so – and treated the expectant crowd to a performance of signature hit ‘I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)’.
Earlier in the evening Forth Valley samba band Beat That opened proceedings with their infectious rhythms and were followed later on the bill by Stirling indie outfit Miniature Dinosaurs and Bags of Rock – a kilted, seven-strong group that fuse heavy metal with bagpipes and other Celtic instruments.
Miniature Dinosaurs’ bassist Alban Dickson said he felt privileged to be part of the spectacle.
He continued: “It was a great opportunity for us to play our music to people who wouldn’t necessarily have heard of us before. The event was really well organised and it was a pleasure to be part of it.
“It was a really good way to end what has been a very busy year for us. I suppose you could call it a reward for the hard work we’ve put in this year – hard work that we’re hoping to continue in 2013.”
Parts of the event, including a section of The Proclaimers’ set and the crowd singing ‘Auld Lang Syne’, were broadcast live to the nation by BBC Scotland.
And eagle-eyed celebrity spotters may have caught a glimpse of Britain’s Got Talent star Susan Boyle – fresh from a recent visit to the Tartan Arms in Bannockburn – in the vicinity of the stage, lapping up the atmosphere.
Bags of Rock drummer Alan Brown, whose group’s appearance featured a memorable cover of Lady Gaga hit ‘Bad Romance’, said: “We definitely all had a good time. We played Hogmanay in Inverness last year and it’s great we got to come to Stirling this time around.
“When we first started a lot of traditional pipers didn’t really approve of what we were doing – mixing bagpipes with rock music – but I think people are starting to come round to the idea and you could tell from the reaction of the crowd at the castle that people seemed to enjoy it.
“The Proclaimers spoke to us backstage. It was great for such an experienced act to take the time out to come and speak to us.”
Fiona Anderson of promoters Zisys Events declared: “The goal for us is always to put something on that’s going to be great for local people, bring visitors and business to the area and to show Stirling off to the rest of the country.”
The Hogmanay party is also supported by Stirling Council and Event Scotland.
Stirling Council Provost Mike Robbins said: “It was a terrific start to 2013 to party with The Proclaimers and a great selection of support acts on the esplanade.
“I hope everyone enjoyed the show, and the fantastic fireworks. There can be few more spectacular places to bring in the bells.” MORE ON PAGES 19-22.

Tattoo’s Archie Goodburn meets Susan Boyle
HE was the Tattoo’s youngest ever soloist, regaling thousands every night with his haunting rendition of Wonderful World – but Archie Goodburn also dreamed a dream of meeting his musical idol, Susan Boyle.
The 12-year-old, who was at the world-renowned show with the Erskine Stewart’s Melville School Choir – who also made history by being the first school choir to perform at the event – had said local girl SuBo was his musical heroine, adding: “She has an amazing voice.”
And he got his own taste of what a wonderful world it can be when his heroine came to watch the Tattoo on the last Friday of the Festival – and made time for a chat after.
Archie, who lives in the West End and has just started secondary school, said: “I wasn’t told she was in the audience until after the performance, which I’m very grateful for as it would have made me really nervous. I was walking down the esplanade when suddenly my music teacher and one of the ladies who works at the Tattoo came and said they had a surprise. I knew they’d seen the article in the Evening News where I’d said I’d love to meet Subo, but it never occurred to me it was about to happen!”
Archie was whisked back up to the Castle and to a special
VIP box where he came face to face with his idol. “I couldn’t believe it at first. I was pretty excited. She was really nice and said that she’d thought my singing was very good. She also signed an autograph for me and we got a picture together. She hadn’t seen the Evening News, but she thought it was funny when we told her. Of all the people that could have come along!”
After going out on a high the youngster – a Scottish swimming champion who believes the breath control he learned in the sport has aided his ability to hold a note, admitted to enjoying some relaxation now the pressure to perform was off.
He said: “I was very nervous on the first night, but I started to enjoy it more after that. However, it’s still quite tiring having to do all those performances, so while I’m sad it’s all over and I really missed it the first couple of nights after we finished, it’s nice to get back to normal. I’ve just started high school, which I’m really enjoying and I have lots of new subjects to get to grips with, so that’s enough for now.”
But he added: “If they asked me to do it again, I would. It was a fantastic experience.”
And the family had extra reason to be proud as they watched from the audience, as Archie wasn’t the only Goodburn performing nightly – the 50-strong ESMS choir also included sister Katie, ten
