Her Secret Struggle Documentary Explores Susan Boyle's Pains and Triumphs - Posted by Parade.com

Each week, journalist and content producer Stephanie Stephens celebrates healthy living with a famous figure age 45+.
I’m taking a special musical detour this week here on Mind Your Body because I previewed the all-access and unabashedly intimate documentary entitled Susan Boyle: Her Secret Struggle. If you’re a fan of Boyle (and honestly, who isn’t?), then you must watch this show. And if you’re unfamiliar with her work, now’s the time to catch up. The program airs Wednesday, April 9, at 10 p.m. ET on Ovation network.
The Scottish singer, who turned 53 on April 1, first performed on Britain’s Got Talent in 2009, with her version of the signature song “I Dreamed a Dream” from the Broadway musical Lés MiserablesLive audience members learned quickly that what you see isn’t always what you get. Her historic performance left them speechless before they erupted into thunderous, feel-good applause (watch it here). Boyle ultimately placed second in the show’s finals on a night when a record 17 million British viewers tuned in. Seven months later, she released her debut album that snagged the number one spot worldwide.

Ovation’s video diary follows her as she plans, rehearses, and finally executes her first tour. She also talks frankly about her 2012 diagnosis of Asperger syndrome, an autism spectrum disorder that is characterized by social impairments, communication difficulties, and restrictive, repetitive, and stereotyped patterns of behavior.
Now with music sales of more than 20 million records, Boyle has proven herself to be a superstar who presents an endearing image far afield from the often over-the-top glitz and glam of music industry A-listers. Boyle continued to release music that captured our hearts and minds, and connected us with a celebrity who thankfully didn’t act “like a celebrity.” Case in point: Boyle still lives in her family’s former “council house”—public housing—in Blackburn, Scotland. And she’s a “cat person.”
For legions of Boyle fans, this show unfolds with a straightforward, behind-the-scenes perspective, no holds barred. When she hurts, we hurt. It’s been no secret that Boyle combated often crippling acute anxiety and panic attacks her entire life, exacerbated en route to performing a multi-song, 90-minute show before thousands of captivated fans in a giant arena setting.
Hitting a Home Run
With the help of her vocal and artistic director Andrew Panton, Boyle builds confidence step by step, and we see how intent she is to prove that she really can cope.
We hear her confess that she was always trying to be accepted, and has lived with a sense of being inferior and just not good enough. The up-close exposé chronicles Boyle through often agonizing rehearsals during which she expresses major self-doubt—and even cries—before conquering her cognitive demons and emerging triumphant for opening night in Scotland. You feel her hesitance, and then her overwhelming sense of accomplishment as she erupts with, “I want some more!” following the performance of her lifetime.
She then jets to America, where she sings like an angel for 20,000 enraptured fans in Houston.
Throughout her journey, you’re reminded that we all have goals, and we all want to succeed, and that it hurts when we face obstacles along the way that seem insurmountable. It’s especially clear in this touching story that in the beginning, Boyle’s greatest obstacle was herself.
“I’m looking forward to doing more,” she concludes. No doubt, her audience is looking forward, too.

Susan Boyle In Concert UK Tour

>>  FRIDAY, APRIL 04, 2014

I went to see Susan Boyle live this week. She was absolutely amazing.

Her singing throughout was strong, note perfect (to my untrained ears). To be frank she is the best singer I have ever heard perform live.

She was joined in part by Lance Ellington from Strictly.  He too was very good and smooth on his feet with it.

She was a little stiff and motionless as she sang in the first half but it didn't take away from the show,  it was designed well around showing what she does best, standing and singing.  Slowly she relaxed and tapped away to the rhythm as she sang on a stool by the piano and she did move around the stage with Lance in a very upbeat number.
She looked absolutely gorgeous and had at least 4 dress changes, all of which were amazingly fast.

Taking photos was strictly policed by the theatre staff where I was and I only dared snap a few at the end.  It was her 53rd birthday on the night we were there and we sang happy birthday to her.  She seemed genuinely happy about it.

One of the most refreshing things for me about this were that the band, backing singers and choir (that came on twice) had been picked for talent above looks.  There was a stage of people of all shapes, sizes and ages performing to an incredible standard. Too often in the music world I think looks are chosen over talent but this show got the balance tipped right.    I was a little surprised by her references and thanks to Britains Got Talent. I know without the show she wouldn't have got a foot in the door but a TV show does not sell 20 million albums, only her talent will do that.

My favourite song will always be 'Wild Horses' and I was struggling to hide the tears as she sang it.  The set list included ‘I Dreamed A Dream’, ‘Perfect Year’, ‘River Deep, Mountain High’, a version of 'You’ll Never Walk Alone' that also moved me to tears, 'You Raise Me Up', 'Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me', an incredible 'As Long as He Needs Me' from Oliver and Chess’ 'I Know Him So Well', Abba's 'The Winner takes it all' and of course 'This is the moment'.

If you can still get tickets to any of the remaining dates (I think it is likely to be another sell out tour - our night was completely sold out) then I thoroughly recommend you go.

Susan Boyle: Her Secret Struggle - Nerves Start to Build (Preview) - Ova...

Today, Susan is half way through the 19 dates of her UK Concert Tour and by all reports, a tremendous success.  When you watch this video clip (below), you think how startling it is to see what Susan has worked through to get where she is today- and she did it splendidly.  She is an inspiration to many worldwide!  It is so amazing to see all that she has done these past few years to be able to get on that big stage and belt out her songs like she does. She has now become that professional singer she has always wanted to be - and super sensational at that she surely is. There are so many reports that the audience at each UK show is loving every moment - enjoying her performance, night after night. So many standing ovations. She did it with persistence and a lot of hard work.  I am so proud to be her fan!  Onward and upward, Ms. Susan Boyle! You are fantastic!

Susan began her performance five minutes late, unaware that a member of the audience had been taken severely ill.
According to the Manchester Evening News, audience members were asked to leave a section of the stalls as ambulance crew administered the emergency procedure.
A witness said: 'It was a member of the audience who started the CPR which was then taken over by the paramedics, who arrived within minutes. I've literally never seen an ambulance crew arrive so quickly'.

'He received first aid at the scene and was taken to hospital by ambulance. The start of the performance was delayed by 5 minutes. We would like to thank audience members for their assistance and concern. We are unable to give any further information.'

Also happy birthday for the one, the fabulous, the great singer Susan Boyle. We still remember that Saturday 11th April, the day that changed Susan’s life. Yes, definitely she got and she has talent. Happy birthday, Susan Boyle.

I was slightly brain damaged at birth, and I want people like me to see that they shouldn’t let a disability get in the way. I want to raise awareness – I want to turn my disability into ability.
Susan Boyle
It was my Mum who got me into singing properly – she knew I had to do something with my voice because she knew I was talented. She was the one who pushed me into joining a choir all those years ago, when I was about 12. I remember she told me to start with the choir and just see where it took me.
