Susan Boyle - UK Charts

Susan Boyle failed to re-enter the UK Charts

After her huge comeback on BGT last week and with over 12 million
people watching, her albums failed to make the top 100

All other performers albums charted, apart from SuBo.
This is huge drop for her.

A comment on this forum:

Having said that, looking on Wikipedia, the sales for her albums have deteriorated really badly.

Her 1st album sold 10 million worldwide, 1.8 million in the UK and 3.1 million in the US
Her 2nd album sold 6.5 million worldwide, 583,000 in the UK and 3 million in the US
Her 3rd album sold 1.5 million worldwide, 100,000 in the UK and 600,000 in the US

She lost 8.5 million sales from her first to third albums!
Now those figures are quite worrying, I hope it gets better with her 4th album!

Susan Boyle with me,  and at his final leaving do!!

Postred in YES

Creative Scots

Comedian and actress, Elaine C. Smith, has taken a break from her starring role in the Susan Boyle Musical (currently playing in Cardiff) to record a special message for the launch of the Yes Campaign.
In her video message Elaine focused on what being independent can mean for Scotland;
"Ultimately it is for the people of this nation to decide their own future but I sincerely hope that these next few months will allow us to have a reasoned and passionate debate about what is best for our country. I hope we can deal with the real issues in this and it will not just be a negative campaign of fear mongering.
"I doubt if the people of India or Ireland or Norway when striving for self determination and a right to govern themselves asked only if they would be richer or better off? Surely being an independent country is as much to do with how we feel in our hearts and minds rather then only economics. In this world even being the strongest and richest economy cannot guarantee a job and secure a future-as many people across the world will tell us today.
"By having Scotland's future in Scotland's hands we in the Yes campaign believe that we can and will make Scotland a better place to live and work......from looking after our old and our sick, ensuring that our young people have a chance of a decent job and a better future, that our education system improves and that poverty...yes that grinding poverty that has afflicted so many parts of our country both in our cities and our rural communities for far too long is a thing of the past.
"Becoming independent is no magic pill but I believe it is the start, a real start, for this country and its people, on the wonderful journey to a better nation."
We'll upload Elaine's video for the launch after the event today, but in the meantime, here she is urging the people of Scotland to sign the Yes Declaration - which you can do here.

Review: Susan Boyle musical I Dreamed A Dream – The New Theatre, Cardiff

Susan Boyle at the end of the opening night of I Dreamed a Dream
Susan Boyle at the end of the opening night of I Dreamed a Dream
THE only sound that really struck a chord with me during I Dreamed A Dream – the Susan  Boyle musical, was actually  the vicious banging of a front door.
The noise, which was used to punctuate each chapter of Britain’s Got Talent’s greatest fairytale, symbolised the relentless bullying Boyle has endured since that fateful audition.
Of course, you can’t deny the facts. The Boyle Story is, as the  musical puts it, “one of numbers.” 500 million YouTube  hits, 16 million records sold  and three Guinness World Records. To sell any records at all  to the download generation is arguably an achievement in itself.
Yet even on the opening night of her own musical, Boyle was  being gossiped about. She had failed to make her much anticipated guest appearance without explanation. Yes, Scottish actress Elaine C. Smith was a brilliant Boyle having her work cut out portraying the absent legend, but it appeared it was the superstar herself that her fans had really come to see.
The Boyle story is, after all, hardly a well kept secret. The press sniffed out a fairy tale back in 2009 and travelled to her hometown of Blackburn,  West Lothian to get it. This musical seeks to pad out the story with some much needed  sensitivity by focusing on  Boyle’s childhood.
After being born deprived of oxygen at birth, her parents  were told ‘not to expect too  much’ which means that some  scenes were sprinkled with a  tad too much fairy dust for my liking. The scene in which  Boyle circles the stage with  first love John to A Perfect  Day, surrounded by whirls of  television studio mist, was just one example of the over-romanticising.
The first half was saved by the rowdier scenes, inspired by Boyle’s nine strong family of singers and her forays into Blackburn community life.
That said Boyle’s incredibly close relationship with her  mother, which left Boyle as her carer for many years, simply could not be captured through a handful of ‘70s hits.
It was actually the part of the fairytale that we already knew,  whether we wanted to or not,  that provided a punchier and, ultimately, more poignant second half.
It perfectly captured talent  show failure (Boyle actually  came second to dance troupe Diversity, remember), instant  celebrity, multimedia news and  the brutal bullying of the paparazzi.
The occasional vicious banging heard in the first half,  pervaded the second half, as  the audiences watched Boyle’s  decline into the exhaustion that is still said to dog her career.
Morgan Large’s set design, which comprised a wall of television screens, showed how  multimedia can be used to truly  enhance the theatre experience  by recreating the media frenzy that surrounded Boyle in the lead up to the BGT final.
Chances are if you’re going to  see I Dreamed a Dream then  you, like a million others, are probably a loyal Boyle fan. Even if you’re not, Smith’s  portrayal of Boyle will make you cheer.

I Dreamed a Dream – New Theatre, Cardiff

Writers: Alan McHugh and Elaine C. Smith
Director: Ed Curtis
Reviewer: Emily Pearce
The Public Reviews Rating: ★★☆☆☆

The Susan Boyle musical, I Dreamed a Dream, is the story of Boyle’s life set to a soundtrack of contemporary songs; the first half detailing her life growing up, the second half showcasing her rapid rise to fame. In what is sometimes known as the ultimate underdog story, it is a storyline that naturally lends itself to musical adaptation and, judging by the audience reaction, is a phenomenon that shows no signs of abating.
Elaine C Smith as the shy reality star gives a thoughtful and vulnerable performance. On stage for almost the entirety of the show, she brilliantly portrays some of Boyle’s difficulties with performing, as well as showcasing some of the more sassy moments she was renowned for on ‘Britain’s Got Talent’.
Vocally however, the show is disappointing. Smith gives a strong performance, particularly in a poignant rendition of ‘Wild Horses’, but is let down by a weaker supporting cast. This may be due to the arrangements of some of the songs, which seem to highlight a lack of cohesion in the chorus parts. With no less than three renditions of ‘I Dreamed a Dream’, the song choices also seem tired, some songs are barely touched upon for a verse before being abandoned, which is at odds with (particularly in the first half) the musical’s very slow pace.
Under-developed supporting roles make it difficult at points to empathise with the star’s struggle. We never really learn why Boyle’s father banned her from seeing her boyfriend, and the death of her sister is barely mentioned. The constant narration by Boyle as a character also seems a little contrived, making the set-up rather more artificial – telling the audience about her life rather than just showing.
A far stronger second half helps pick up the pace of the show; it is both enjoyable and disturbing to watch Boyle’s success and the greed with which the media circle. Here Morgan Large’s excellent and innovative set is exploited far more; the wall of television screens emphasising the pressure Boyle felt as the world watched her meteoric rise.
The audience reaction was enthused throughout, but by the conclusion it seemed that the applause was for Boyle’s plight and personality (despite Susan Boyle not being able to make an appearance at this performance), rather than for the actual show content.

Runs until 26th May 2012.

I Dreamed a Dream – Cliffs Pavilion, Southend

The Public Reviews Rating: ★★★★★

It’s said that the words of a song are only as good as the singer, otherwise they don’t mean as much.
From the moment the curtain rose, the air is filled with magic, a magic that happily stays with us until the final curtain call.
Elaine C Smith as the much beloved Susan Boyle is superb, Smith packs every ounce of meaning possible in her rendition of every one of her songs. Her superb voice, combined with her unbeatable acting talents and striking similarity to Susan’s looks, gives us a performance that is sheer joy. Her interpretation of Susan’s persona, the cheeky wriggle, the one-armed hand on hip pose – typical Susan quirks – contrast so poignantly with later scenes depicting heartfelt misery at being bullied in the schoolroom. Her doubts, her fears, her joy, her unforced humour and cheeky twinkle coming across with impeccable finesse. A triumph.
Jame Paterson as Mr Boyle has a remarkably rich warm voice, deep and resonant, never shown better than when he sung Scarlet Ribbons -a delight to hear. Karen Mann as Mrs Boyle is particularly moving in the family church scene, her voice clear and strong, her diction at all times perfect.
Both these artistes are a perfect combination, not only in their duets, but also their heartfelt portrayal of love and concern for their daughter.
Ben Cracknell’s mind-blowing lighting and Morgan Large’s set also impress. It will undoubtedly be a very long time before we see a combination, so imaginative, skilful and adept at moving the story along such as this. The entire backdrop consists of a mass of TV sets. You want a church? A line of light snakes up, drawing a path to church as a child would use etch-a-sketch. A house miraculously appears, it’s interior seeming to draw itself into glowing colour. An intricate interior design of church again.Britain’s Got Talent shots of judges and contestants in non-stop configuration. Everything the show needed to tell the story in lighting and vision. Very clever indeed.
Then, of course, just when you think the show is over, we get the icing on the cake. The jewel in the crown shining as never before, that unexpected fiver found in the pocket, Susan herself.
Beautiful, assured, witty and natural. Her heart-warming charm pours over the footlights to enchant. The audience goes wild, then silence as no one moves a muscle as she starts singing I Dreamed a Dream.
Susan, there is another song that fits you perfectly. It’s called, Stay as Sweet as You Are. And millions are sure that you will. A terrific show in all aspects. Go and enjoy every second!

Runs until Saturday 12th May then continues to tour

Susan Boyle. Surprise For Sudden Star, On Early Show CBS News

Susan Boyle talking to Patti Lupone….Despite the patronising manner of the interviewers, Its great to see Susan doing well. Go Susan. But we are not asking for “feminine”…thats the whole point! , we have celebs that have been pulled and tweaked and airbrushed and…we have magazines that constantly make us feel bad about the way we look. They focus in on cellulite, scars… an ounce of fat or a spot (zit) and your yesterdays news. That is the whole point of this story! It seems we are going back to our roots. I remember living with my Aunts in Scotland, the pubs closed at 10…as did the TV, no internet, no mobiles…we all sang, as I am sure Susan Boyle and her mother did. Susan Boyle was brought up in that enviroment and thus had the time to practice and entertain her mother, and sometimes the neighbours. These days its all hurly and burly, getting thin, getting a tan, getting in with the right crowd, making sure your Facebook is up to date and projecting the right image of yourself and how wonderful and perfect and fabulous your life is. Susan Boyle just sang…and look at the tizzy we are getting into. Just relax and listen to her voice. That is all.

Elaine C Smith glimpses superstardom as she steps into Susan Boyle’s shoes

elaine c smith
Elaine C Smith as Susan Boyle

Susan Boyle has proved that talent is more than about the way you look. As actress Elaine C Smith plays the superstar singer in the story of her life she tells Karen Price how she’s also been enjoying a taste of international stardom thanks to her new role

ACTRESS Elaine C Smith knows a thing or two about living in the spotlight thanks to her role in cult sitcom Rab C Nesbitt as well as a host of other TV and theatre shows.
But she recently received a taste of life as a global superstar, appearing on The Today Show in America, Sky News bulletins and even Georgian television.
“It was really weird, what had happened to Susan was happening to me. It was just remarkable,” she says.
Susan is of course Susan Boyle – the shy Scottish pub singer who became an international star in just a matter of weeks after appearing on Britain’s Got Talent.
Today Boyle has millions in the bank, chart-topping albums under her belt – and a new stage show dedicated to her incredible life story.
Smith is playing the part of Boyle in I Dreamed A Dream, and, during many performances, the singer herself appears in the finale.
When the musical opened earlier this year, Smith found herself making headlines around the world – just as Boyle did when she was discovered on the ITV1 series.
“We opened in Newcastle in March and the reaction’s been unbelievable,” she says. “We’ve got five-star reviews and I ended up on The Today Show in America. Sian Phillips, the great Welsh acting queen who I was in Calendar Girls with, texted me to say, ‘Darling, I’ve just seen you on Georgian television’.
“Cameron Mackintosh was on the phone, Andrew Lloyd Webber was on the phone – it’s just been amazing.”
Boyle wanted Smith to play her in the story of her life from the outset. And the two women seem to have struck up a bond since meeting.
“She’s lovely, really nice, warm and funny,” says Smith, who was born about 20 miles from Boyle’s home in Scotland. “She’s really enjoying doing the show, although it was very difficult for her initially when she watched it. All her family came and they were all in tears.”
The musical tells the story of Boyle’s life – from her humble beginnings to stardom.
Born into a large working class family in central Scotland in 1961, she shared a three-bedroomed council house with 10 while she was growing up.
Briefly deprived of oxygen during her birth, she had a learning disability which resulted in her being bullied as a child.
But Boyle, who found strength and solace in her faith, loved to sing and, following the death of her beloved mother, she auditioned for Britain’s Got Talent.
Around 10 million people watched on television as she sang I Dreamed A Dream from Les Miserables and judge Amanda Holden remarked upon the audience’s initially cynical attitude due to her appearance before they realised she had such a powerful voice.
Tens of millions of people went on to view the clip on YouTube and Boyle became an overnight sensation.
Smith was on stage in Calendar Girls when the programme was aired.
When she was told about the Scottish singing sensation, Smith joked that she would probably end up playing her in the story of her life.
“I went home and saw the audition and sat crying my eyes out,” says the actress. “That was the effect she had. It showed the type of world we’re living in. If you were blonde and gorgeous it didn’t matter if you didn’t have talent – you looked the right way. Susan was exactly the opposite. She made us all realise that talent matters more than lots of other things. It can’t only be about the way you look.”
Fast forward four years and Smith’s premonition has come true.
But when the ideas were initially mooted to dramatise the story of Boyle’s rise to fame, there was talk of a Hollywood movie.
“There was an article in the Radio Times and Susan said she wanted me to play her but I thought, ‘it won’t be me if it’s in Hollywood – it will be Michelle Pfeiffer with a bad Scottish accent’.”
However, it was decided to make the story a musical theatre piece with Smith as the leading lady.
The actress recalls the first time she met Boyle.
“At the end of our meeting, she put her arms around me and said she would be honoured if I played her.”
Her schedule allowing, Boyle joins Smith on stage for the finale of the production.
While there have been many reports over the years of tantrums and breakdowns, how does Smith think Boyle is now coping with stardom four years after her life-changing appearance on Britain’s Got Talent?
“She’s enjoying it much more than she did before, she’s more acclimatised to it. Imagine going from singing at karaoke to that? I think she’s coped amazingly.”
I Dreamed A Dream is at the New Theatre, Cardiff from Tuesday to May 26. For tickets, call the box office on 029 2087 8889 or visit www.newtheatrecardiff.co.uk
