Dear Lynne Russell,

I am thrilled that your University is honoring Susan Boyle by giving her an Honorary Doctorate in recognition of her contribution to the creative industries.   Well Done!  Susan has inspired millions of people all over the world.  She has given courage to many who seem to be forgotten by society.  She has contributed to numerous charities and events.  She is always considerate to her fans and anyone who approaches her.   She has overcome and raised above sever bullying against her, even today. There are not enough words to express how I, and many of my fellow fans, feel and care about Susan Boyle. Your university selected the right kind, caring and compassionate super star.  Edinburgh's Queen Margaret University must be commended for honoring this brilliant, marvelous and thoughtful super singing star.

I am a senior fan in the USA, who absolutely loves Susan.  I have been following Susan since I saw the BGT 2009 video.  I went to the Today show twice in New York just to see and hear her sing. I belong to the fan sites and fan groups dedicated to Susan.  I keep three blogs on her activities and tribute videos.  I, and 19 other fans, had the privilege of meeting Susan Boyle in person on August 20, 2011 in New York.  Each fan was given time with Susan to have something signed or simply just talk with her.  I had my fan T-shirt signed by her (while I was wearing it). This action is on her TV special " An Unlikely Superstar".  I saw with my own eyes what a sincere, kind, compassionate sweet little lady Susan is.  As I said, I am thrilled seeing your grand honor bestowed on Susan, who definitely deserves the recognition of her achievements.  Thank you.

Susan Boyle joins industry leader, public servant and academic to receive honorary degree from Queen Margaret University
Edinburgh, 28 June 2012 : Susan Boyle is to receive an honorary doctorate in recognition of her contribution to the creative industries, from Queen Margaret University (QMU), the institution where she once studied towards a Certificate of Higher Education for Carers.
At a summer graduation ceremony in Edinburgh to be held on 6 July 2012, QMU founding chancellor Sir Tom Farmer will confer the Degree of Doctor of the University, Honoris Causa, on musical performer Susan Boyle; the eminent developmental psychologist Professor Colwyn Trevarthen; leading hotelier and hospitality industry champion Norman Springford and Professor Ian Percy CBE, former chair of QMU’s board of governors. Each honorary graduate is recognised for the relevance of their work to society at large, reflecting the university’s own commitment to enhancing lives in the communities it serves.
Brought up in Blackburn West Lothian where she still lives today, Susan Boyleachieved international fame with her television debut in 2009 when she sang ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ from Les Miserables on Britain’s Got Talent. That performance alone has since been watched by over 500 million people worldwide and she is now a global phenomenon whose achievements in the face of adversity have become an inspiration to others.
Her first album, I Dreamed a Dream, was the fastest-selling debut album of all time. With the release of two further albums she has since sold over 18 million albums worldwide, and had over 120 platinum and gold albums across 38 countries. She was the first female artist to have two number one albums simultaneously in the UK and USA twice within 12 months in the history of the charts. Only the Beatles and The Monkees have achieved the same.
She has performed for Pope Benedict XVI and Queen Elizabeth II, and performed on TV in the UK, USA, Australia, Ireland, and Japan. She has also performed live on television in China to half a billion people on China’s Got Talent. A documentary has been made about her life and the stage musical, I Dreamed a Dream, has sold out across the country to enthusiastic and appreciative audiences. She will receive her honorary doctorate in recognition of significant services to culture and the creative industries.
New Zealander Colwyn Trevarthen is Professor (Emeritus) of Child Psychology and Psychobiology at The University of Edinburgh. He has published over 200 articles and chapters on brain development, infant communication and child learning and emotional health.
Professor Trevarthen has a PhD in Psychobiology from Caltech in Pasadena, where he worked with Roger Sperry on the neuroscience of consciousness and how complementary motives of the two cerebral hemispheres serve intelligent acting and communicating. He was a post-doctoral researcher at the Center for Cognitive Studies at Harvard, where his influential research on infant communication or 'intersubjectivity' began with Jerome Bruner in 1966. He will receive his honorary doctorate in recognition of significant services to education.
Professor Ian Percy CBE qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1967, becoming a partner in Grant Thornton when he was just 28 years old, and where he enjoyed a long and successful career in Scotland and in London.
In 1990 he was elected President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland where he sought to advance the profession’s thinking by proposing a review of governance. This suggestion found favour with the Governor of the Bank of England, the Chief Secretary to the Treasury and the Chair of the Stock Exchange and led to the establishment of the Cadbury Committee. This was followed by the establishment of the Auditing Practices Board, on which he served as Vice Chairman until 2002. He also served as the UK Member of the International Auditing Practices Committee. As Chairman of the Accounts Commission for Scotland, the organisation that oversaw local government finances, he challenged local authorities to make their finances and decision making more transparent to the public and championed ‘value for money’ reports. He held this position until 2000, when devolution established Audit Scotland, which oversaw both local authority and health service accounts, and he became its first Chairman, serving until 2002.
He has been Chairman of Kiln plc, Cala Ltd and Companies House as well as The Edinburgh Academy. He was Deputy Chairman of The Weir Group plc and Ricardo plc, and a member of various boards in the private, public and charity sectors. He will receive his honorary doctorate in recognition of his significant contribution to public service, and in appreciation of his six year tenure as Chair of the Governing body at QMU, in which he oversaw achievement of full university title and the establishment of a brand new campus at Musselburgh.
An accountant by profession, businessman and hotelier Norman Springford is a former employee of HMRC who went on to start up his own accountancy firm. In the 1980s he had interests in the pub trade and then a bingo hall, finally purchasing the Playhouse Theatre in Edinburgh which was sold on to Apollo in the mid-1990s.
He opened his first hotel in 1996 and now the family-owned Apex Hotel group has grown to include 8 hotels in Edinburgh, London and Dundee. In April 2012 he was awarded the HIT Scotland Lifetime Achievement Award by The Hospitality Industry Trust He will receive his honorary doctorate from QMU in recognition of his significant services to the hospitality industry.

Happy days ... Susan Boyle
Happy days ... Susan Boyle

Our great gift hits the right note

BIRTHDAY girl Susan was blown away after she got her very own set of presents from her favourite paper.
Scottish Sun delivery man Kenny Angove made sure SuBo was on song when we gave her a KARAOKEmachine.
We also gave the national hero a commemorative front page to mark the half-century, as well as a birthday cake designed as her face.

Fun-loving Susan said: “I love things like this. The karaoke machine is brilliant, I’ll have a go on that later.
“I’ll serve the cake at my party — they can eat the eyebrows first. I love The Scottish Sun, thanks so much.”
And cheeky Susan even joked with our kilted delivery lad about what he was wearing under his tartan.
She said: “Are you a true Scotsman? I bet the wind is blowing up there a bit.”
Susan took time out from arranging her birthday bash to send a special message to her army of fans.
She said: “I’d just like to say thank you to all the readers of The Scottish Sun for all the encouragement they’ve given me over the past two years.
“I’ve never been more proud to be a Scot. I’ve had some wonderful moments throughout my life and I would like to thank everyone for their kindness.
“I wouldn’t be here without it and I appreciate it every single day.”

SuBo: I’m still thrifty at 50

MULTI-MILLIONAIRE Susan Boyle has revealed she’s still scared to splash the cash.

The Scots singing sensation hits the half-century mark today.
But in typical SuBo style, the canny spinster will NOT go off on a spending spree or host an extravagant showbiz party.
Instead Susan, estimated to be worth a staggering £18MILLION, will be surrounded by close friends and family in an intimate bash at a country mansion near her home in Blackburn, West Lothian.
And she insists she’ll also be buying her party frock from one of her favourite value-for-money High Street stores.
In an exclusive interview with The Scottish Sun last night, Susan said: “The party is not going to be extravagant.
“It’s a small party for friends and family to celebrate my birthday and also my way of spoiling them and saying thank you for all the support and help they’ve given me over the years.

“I want to treat them to a wonderful evening and my 50th is as good an excuse as any.”
It is rumoured some of SuBo’s closest showbiz mates will be on the guest list though.
They include Piers Morgan, Simon Cowell and Scots actress Elaine C Smith. And there’s talk of a surprise appearance by funnyman Peter Kay, who performed the Comic Relief duet I Know Him So Well with SuBo.
But coy Susan — the youngest of nine — would only say: “There may well be a few well-known faces coming but my lips are sealed.
“I’ve got to keep some surprises for my guests on the night.
“But it’s a party for my close friends and family more than a star-studded occasion. I really want them to enjoy themselves.
“This party is as much about them as it is about my 50th. I want a small and as intimate a party as possible to celebrate.”
Susan has always liked to keep it low-key.
Last month she turned up at a campaign launch in Glasgow wearing a £1.50 charity shop ring, while she will leave shopping for her 50th birthday outfit until the very last moment.
And even then she’ll only be browsing the aisles of her favourite Tesco or M&Co.
She says: “I haven’t bought a dress, not yet, but I’m going to. I will be going to my usual spots in Edinburgh to see what I can find. I haven’t got anything in mind but I’m sure when I see the dress I know it will be right.”
Since finding fame and fortune just two years ago, her most extravagant purchase to date was splashing out on a £400,000 five- bedroom villa last year, near her old council house.
She’s also a big gadget fan, treating herself to an iPhone 4 and an iPod, while the new iPad 2 is said to top her birthday wish-list.
Susan says: “I don’t believe in being reckless with money. I never have been and that’s not about to change.”
But even as SuBo hits the big 5-0, her star status shows no sign of fading.
Fans ... Simon Cowell, Piers Morgan and Elaine C Smith
Fans ... Simon Cowell, Piers Morgan and Elaine C Smith
She became the first British female in history to top the album charts in the UK and the USA in the same year, selling 14 million records along the way.
The Scot is currently working on her third album in London where she’s been putting in gruelling recording sessions.
Insiders are already predicting it’ll be another huge hit, describing her performances in a secret studio as ‘mind-boggling’.
It’s a remarkable change of fortunes for the self-confessed ‘wee wifey’ whose life changed forever on April 11, 2009.
That’s the day her rendition of I Dreamed A Dream was screened on ITV1’s Britain’s Got Talent and turned Susan into the biggest overnight sensation of all time.
But she struggled to come to grips with her worldwide fame, which included a stint in The Priory following a breakdown, after finishing runner-up in the Britain’s Got Talent final.
Now Susan insists she’s finally found peace and happiness for the first time in decades.
She said: “The last two years have been fantastic.
“Apart from them, my favourite years were during the Eighties. I loved that whole era of my life.”
Tellingly, that was before the death of her 80-year-old father Patrick — who was also a talented singer — in 1990.
Susan then helped nurse her elderly mother Bridget — the woman she called “my guiding light” — until her death in 2007, aged 91.
The former trainee chef’s only escapism from her responsibilities was singing with her church choir and performing karaoke down her local pub, The Happy Valley.
But now she literally feels top of the world.
Even BGT boss Simon Cowell has declared SuBo is the No1 female recording artist on the planet.
She says: “Life doesn’t get much better than the last two years. There have been some wonderful moments that I will never forget.”
They include her stunning rendition of The Rolling Stones’ classic Wild Horses on the final of America’s Got Talent.
While last month she moved the audience to tears at the Scottish Variety Awards at Glasgow’s Crowne Plaza with a haunting rendition of Lou Reed’s Perfect Day.
And she’s even come to terms with her nickname SuBo. Susan says: “It’s a name the Press came up with. I think it’s funny, but my friends and family still call me Susan.”
The world’s most famous spinster still has no man in her life — and isn’t looking for one either.
She says: “You can never say never to finding someone.
“But it’s possible to be happy and to be on your own. I’ve managed all these years just fine.”
Now, Susan has her sights firmly focused on the future and admits she’s excited about entering her fifties.
She joked: “Well, there’s not a lot I can do about it! But I don’t have a problem with it, I’m happy with it.
“And I promise I will be growing older gracefully.”
And the superstar Scot also has some words of wisdom for others who have dared to dream a dream.
She added: “I think the best advice I could ever give is don’t regret anything you have done in life — it’s all part of you and who you are.
“And if there is something you really want to do, well go out there and do it.
“It’s never too late.”

The Phenomenon who's Susan Boyle

Posted by Homerun on Monday, 25 June 2012 in Life
by Amy Twain
By the time you read this, you probably heard of the inspiring life story of Susan Boyle. A 47-year old, unemployed, never been married (and never been kissed) woman from Scotland who elicited lots of praises and compliments not just from the three judges, but also from millions of people across the universe, thanks to Youtube.

Her inspiring story spread rapidly like wildfire and inspires others (especially underdogs and dark horses like her) to reach for your dreams no matter what. The Britain’s Got Talent contestant (by far the most popular these days), delivered a strong performance backed up with an even appropriate and inspirational song, “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Miserables. I like watching that show, in the sense that Britain’s Got Talent is indeed about talent. It’s about talent through and through, despite your looks, and your age. And what I even like most about the inspiring story of Ms. Susan Boyle is that it’s as if she’s the epitome of dreaming and believing in your dreams—and not putting an age limit to your dreams and goals.

What makes this inspiring story so appealing to the masses, is the fact that we have a not-so-young dreamer dreaming to be a professional singer (wants to be as successful as Elaine Page at that!), when generally, dreaming is associated for the young and their promising future. But here, we have Susan Boyle to change the face of dreaming big and giving us her inspiring story.

Truly, she’s not just a living example, but also a living inspiration as well! I know of other singing competitions that imposed age limits on their contestants. It’s good that Britain’s Got Talent never limits their contestants for a certain age bracket only. Why this allure about second chances and underdogs and dark horses? And why not—it just goes to show that all of us, at some moments in our lives, can relate to being underdogs, since we experienced what it feels like being an underdog ourselves.

We want to inspired and strengthened after failure, rejection, and frustration. An inspiring story like Susan Boyle’s is just one strong validation and we felt justified that we can be like her. She’s also a real person (and not just any fictitious character) and she’s like one of us, living an ordinary life but who wants to have a better life.

So, how who can resist this inspiring story? As we live our day to day struggle in our lives, we all need some bits of inspiration to make us smile, enlightened, hopeful and optimistic for our future. And we don’t need pretty faces, toned muscles, almost-perfect hair that light up our TV screens to make us inspired.

On the contrary, it’s those flawed, ordinary-looking individuals which we can relate to that make us more humane and we can say, “If she can do it, I can too.” And I love that smiling aura of Ms. Boyle devoid of any arrogance or self-pity (unemployed, but still looking) when asked what she’s going to do onstage.

She said, “I’m gonna wow the audience”. And boy, she did more than just that—she even received a standing ovation not just from the crowd, but also from the two judges. Everybody’s got an inspiring story---what’s yours?

Susan Boyle Don't Dream it's Over

SUSAN BOYLE - "DON'T DREAM IT'S OVER" LYRICS

There is freedom within, there is freedom without
Try to catch the deluge in a paper cup
There's a battle ahead, many battles are lost
But you'll never see the end of the road
While you're traveling with me

Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
We know they won't win

Now I'm towing my car, there's a hole in the roof
My possessions are causing me suspicion but there's no proof
In the paper today, tales of war and of waste
But you turn right over to the TV page

Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
We know they won't win

Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
We know they won't win
We know they won't win
We know they won't win
We know they won't win

‘Glee’ season 4: Revisiting Susan Boyle, Justin Timberlake, other old rumors

Who should join in?
At this point in time, we might as well be honest about it — Ryan Murphy is going to stuff as many guest stars onto the upcoming season of “Glee” as he can. Sometimes (see Neil Patrick Harris) it ends up being pretty entertaining; other times (think Olivia Newton-John), it turns out to be a waste of everyone’s time.
Over the years, “Glee” has been the target of quite possibly more false casting stories than any other show in existence — which is really where the source of this article comes from. For so long, one of the biggest arguments against having certain celebrity actors appear at McKinley High was that it would be strange to see them there. Could you really make Susan Boyle or Jennifer Lopez into lunch ladies, and why would a rock star played by Javier Bardem be there?
With all of this in mind, we’re going to revisit five of the most-discussed rumors in the history of the show, and analyze based on what we know where they could fit into season 4.
Javier Bardem – This one is the most interesting, mostly in that it legitimately seemed to be happening until it suddenly wasn’t. The Oscar-winner already has a relationship with Murphy, and would still probably come on as a rock star (as was the story the first time). The difference? He would probably now need to be in New York City, since there’s still little need for a rocker to see Artie in Lima (which, if you remember, was the original story).
Susan Boyle – With the announcement of Sarah Jessica Parker and Kate Hudson coming on the show as mentors, wouldn’t the former “Britain’s Got Talent” star be perfect in a similar role? Rather than having to take on some cheesy lunch lady part as suggested last time, she could now be a Broadway icon who Rachel Berry is desperate to meet or even work with.
Jennifer Lopez – The good thing about J.Lo is that if she ever really wanted to be on the show, she could play pretty much anyone — she has enough range and personality to make it work. Considering that the show is already planning some tie-ins to “The X Factor” in the fall (including another Britney Spears tribute), why not invite Lopez for a guest spot if she stays on “American Idol?” After all, it’s brand synergy!
Justin Timberlake – This rumor never picked up too much steam when it first surfaced, but we still believe that he would be a lock to play Matthew Morrison’s brother. Remember the days when Will was actually the lead character on the show? We’d like to see a return to that.
Taylor Swift – Couldn’t you see Taylor being the perfect new friend for Rachel in New York? This rumor never really rose beyond chatter, but when it comes to her acting experience and musical talent, it seems to be one of the most logical suggestions for casting producers to throw out there.
With the cast of main characters being shrunk down, the door is going to be open for more guests — now, it’s just a question of whether Murphy will get some big names, or some faces better suited for specific situations.
Are there any celebrity guest stars that you want on the show next season, or are you saying a giant “no” to the whole idea of more celebrities taking away from the main characters?

Susan Boyle The Musical

It was with a little trepidation I took my seat on the opening night of the new touring production, I Dreamed a Dream. Familiar with the Susan Boyle story, or so I thought, I wasn’t entirely sure how this would translate into an evening of musical theatre, could her story really captivate a packed theatre for two and a half hours? Even speaking to two audience members who’d travelled from Japan just to be here, I still had my reservations.
I needn’t have worried; within minutes of the first act starting it soon became clear that this was something special. Elaine C Smith’s sensitive and loving portrayal of the shy miner’s daughter from Blackburn, West Lothian was exceptional. Stepping into Boyle’s shoes Smith (who co-wrote the script with Alan McHugh) takes on the role of both performer and narrator, guiding us smoothly through the years leading up to the infamous BGT audition. She is faultless in her portrayal of Boyle and her heartfelt performance of Wild Horses is worth the admission price alone.
Though a rather sad story at times, the humour and sensitivity of the script touchingly illustrates the most poignant scenes from Boyle’s life. When told of Boyle’s mild learning disability and of what she “can’t do” we see Boyle’s parents movingly state all that they care about is what she “can and will do” complimented beautifully through a well placed song, The joy is in the child.
The bullying “Simple Susan” experienced throughout her school years is creatively worked into the story and allows the audience to gain a further understanding of Boyle’s complex character. Morgan Large’s set although simple is very effective, a full wall of TV screens which flicker with imagery scene after scene.
Using familiar songs such as, Someone to watch over me, Perfect Day and Daydream Believer, Director Ed Curtis guides us through Boyle’s difficult start to life, challenging childhood and the heartbreak of her father forbidding her the chance of love with school friend John because she was, “not ready for a boyfriend”. We observe the sadness Boyle experienced with the loss of her sister, Father and Mother and the profound impact this had upon her character.
The second half of the show covers the more familiar parts of the story we already know, we see Boyle successfully audition for BGT allowing us to gain further insight into the impact becoming such a global overnight success had upon the shy singer. The show chooses not to make reference to Boyle’s mean treatment by Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden and Pierce Morgan before they’d heard her sing but one couldn’t help feel someone should have been looking after her. However Boyle’s fighting spirit shines through and we see her battle her demons to take centre stage once again.
It is at this point the real Susan Boyle makes a guest appearance to remind us why we’re all here. Greeted with a standing ovation before she even sings it is clear Boyle has the audience well and truly in the palm of her hand. Along with being treated to I Dreamed a Dream and Who I was Born to Be, we also get to see the cheeky playful side of her the fans clearly love, when a voice from the audience shouts, “give us a wiggle” she’s more than happy to oblige!
The show is emotional, funny, thought provoking and brilliantly acted, a real treat.
