Susan Boyle: 'Don't Be Held Back by What People Think of You'

The beloved Britain’s Got Talent winner, 53, releases Hope on Oct. 21 and kicks off her first U.S. tour on Oct. 8.
What are you most looking forward to with this tour?
I’m excited to go to new places. It’s a big thank-you to my American fans for embracing me for who I am.

What has been your biggest pinch-me moment since achieving fame?
Singing with Donny Osmond! I used to be so mad about him. I had so many marks on my wall as a teenager from his posters.
What do you remember most about your 2009 Britain’s Got Talent audition?
Everybody was laughing because of my drab appearance, but when they dug deeper, they realized that this woman had a hidden talent—and that talent came through in a surprising way. You shouldn’t ever be held back by what people think of you.
You were diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome in 2012. How has that affected you?
I’m more relaxed and confident. People have a better understanding of me now. I don’t feel so alienated. Asperger’s is a condition I have to live with, but it hasn’t prevented me from doing what I love. I have a lot more to offer.

Susan Boyle in the News

Susan Boyle's dream brings her to U.S.

Singer’s breakthrough came in audition for “Britain’s Got Talent”

Susan Boyle couldn’t have picked a more fitting song than “I Dreamed a Dream” from “Les Miserables” to sing during her audition for “Britain’s Got Talent” five years ago.
Boyle, with her plain appearance and awkward demeanor on stage, drew snickers when she told the audience and judges that she wanted to be a professional singer like Elaine Page.
Then she opened her mouth and began to sing. By the time she finished, she was well on her way to international sensation status, and that dream morphed into reality.
The 53-year-old will kick off her first American tour in San Diego next week and perform in Greenville on Oct. 27. Tickets are on sale now.
Boyle, whose sixth album will be released this month, said she wasn’t ready to tour the U.S. until now.
“It has been something I’ve wanted to do, but it wasn’t the right time, the right material,” she said in a phone interview from Scotland. “It’s the right time now.”
Boyle said she was very shy and withdrawn before her three-and-a-half minute audition, and had to learn how to conduct herself in public.
Going from obscurity to worldwide fame was a shock, she said. TV stations from all over the world camped out on her street. She’d peek out of the curtains of her house and wonder what was going on. Her telephone (the number was still listed in the phone book) began ringing off the hook.
Boyle has since sold more than 14 million albums worldwide. She said her concert will include upbeat, feel-good songs and songs that make her cry.

Susan goes to America!

Hi Grace

Message from Susan...

"Well, what a fantastic beginning to the trip in New York.

I performed on the Today Show, it's the fifth time I've been back in five years and I really feel a part of the Today show family. I sang You Raise Me Up and Wish You Were Here. It's a great show to appear on even when we have to get up at 4am!

After that it was straight on to Good Day New York, pre-recorded for when the album is out inAmerica on the 21st October (be sure to tune in and watch it!).
Susan Today Show
At midday we finished and went to my favourite restaurant, La Bonne Soupe on 6th and 55th. I had the best French Onion Soup and mussels for lunch followed by a delicious chocolate mousse.

In the afternoon it was off to my favourite shop, Bloomingdales, where I treated myself to some lovely new outfits from my favourite designer Donna Karen, she does the most wonderful clothes and I treat myself once a year when I come to New York, don't want to be too frivolous with my pennies!

After such a great start, I'm so happy with the reception to the new album and I'm really looking forward to flying to LA and beginning the tour!

Thank you to you all for the continued support and words of kindness......
"

"Wish You Were Here".
Absolutely wonderful performance from Susan Boyle!

Thank you, Tommy!

Wish You Were Here

So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from Hell,
Blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

Did they get you to trade
Your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange
A walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl,
Year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found
The same old fears.
Wish you were here
