Susan Boyle in the News

Susan Boyle's dream brings her to U.S.

Singer’s breakthrough came in audition for “Britain’s Got Talent”

Susan Boyle couldn’t have picked a more fitting song than “I Dreamed a Dream” from “Les Miserables” to sing during her audition for “Britain’s Got Talent” five years ago.
Boyle, with her plain appearance and awkward demeanor on stage, drew snickers when she told the audience and judges that she wanted to be a professional singer like Elaine Page.
Then she opened her mouth and began to sing. By the time she finished, she was well on her way to international sensation status, and that dream morphed into reality.
The 53-year-old will kick off her first American tour in San Diego next week and perform in Greenville on Oct. 27. Tickets are on sale now.
Boyle, whose sixth album will be released this month, said she wasn’t ready to tour the U.S. until now.
“It has been something I’ve wanted to do, but it wasn’t the right time, the right material,” she said in a phone interview from Scotland. “It’s the right time now.”
Boyle said she was very shy and withdrawn before her three-and-a-half minute audition, and had to learn how to conduct herself in public.
Going from obscurity to worldwide fame was a shock, she said. TV stations from all over the world camped out on her street. She’d peek out of the curtains of her house and wonder what was going on. Her telephone (the number was still listed in the phone book) began ringing off the hook.
Boyle has since sold more than 14 million albums worldwide. She said her concert will include upbeat, feel-good songs and songs that make her cry.
