Scottish singer Susan Boyle is on her first U.S. tour. Up next? Australia.
Susan Boyle is sure she’s told the story a million times. It comes out chiseled and polished — and in a thick accent.
“I will never forget it,” the Scottish singer begins, in a measured tone as if she’s speaking in time with a metronome. “On the 11th of April, 2009 …”
No one could forget how she sang her way into the hearts of judges on Britain’s Got Talent, and quickly, the world. Least of all Boyle, who will perform Monday night at Bass Performance Hall, barring any last-minute complications from a throat infection that saw her cancel a date almost two weeks ago in Santa Barbara, Calif. She’s currently on her first tour in the U.S.
One can’t blame her for an answer that sounds rehearsed. The rest of the world can’t seem to get enough of the telling, and she gets asked often about her audition for the reality TV competition show.
Her enthusiasm still shines through, all the way to the end of the story: “I was really excited. I was thrilled to be there,” she says. “And it turned out to be the best move I’ve ever made.”
Boyle just wants to sing. And, like that old Coca-Cola ad, she wants the world to sing with her.
She’s always been an unlikely star, pointing out that she had “mad hair” and “bushy eyebrows.”
“People were laughing at me rather than with me,” she says of when she stepped onstage to audition. “I knew somehow that this would either make me or break me.” After a makeover and 22 million albums sold, she is a supernova.
And she’s set many milestones, including: The video of her audition was the most-viewed one on YouTube in 2009. She is the only artist older than 50 to chart at No. 1 with her first album. Royal photographer Jason Bell shot the cover photo for her sixth album, Hope.
Expect her to sing some of the songs from the new album, which is scheduled to be released Tuesday. And place a sure bet she’ll sing that awe-inspiring audition song, “I Dreamed a Dream,” which she calls “my signature tune,” along with “some surprises.”
She says she doesn’t dislike any genre — “I haven’t seen one yet” — no matter how she’s prodded.
“I have to say I like musical theater,” she says. “I like standards, I like romantic numbers. I like inspirational numbers such as ‘Angel.’ It goes on. There’s far too much to go through here.”
So, now that she’s conquering America, again, what’s next?
“I’ll have a little rest,” she says, “and then, all going well, I’ll go to Australia.”
