Britain's Got Talent singing sensation Susan Boyle has been given an honorary doctorate by an Edinburgh university.
The Scot was honoured by Queen Margaret University for her contribution to the creative industries. She once studied at the university for a certificate in caring.
The degree was presented to the star by founding chancellor Sir Tom Farmer, the business tycoon behind Kwik-Fit.
It is for work in society at large, which the university says reflects its commitment to the communities it serves.
Brought up in Blackburn, West Lothian, where she still lives, Boyle, 51, achieved international fame after her television debut in 2009.
She sang I Dreamed A Dream - from the musical Les Miserables - on ITV's Britain's Got Talent.
One YouTube clip of the performance has had more than 21.5 million hits while in total she has received more than 300 million hits on the site.
Her first album, called I Dreamed A Dream and released in 2009, was at the time the fastest-selling debut album ever.
With the release of two further albums, Boyle has since sold about 18 million albums worldwide and has 120 platinum and gold albums across 38 countries.
She has sung on TV in the UK, the US, Australia, Ireland and Japan, and performed for Pope Benedict XVI and the Queen.
The former local church chorister also sang live to half a billion people on the TV show China's Got Talent.
Honorary doctorates were also conferred on developmental psychologist Professor Colwyn Trevarthen; leading hotelier and hospitality industry champion Norman Springford and Professor Ian Percy, former chair of QMU’s board of governors.
Each honorary graduate is recognised for the relevance of their work to society at large.
