Susan Boyle: I'd like Will Ferrell in my Christmas stocking

My perfect weekend: the Britain's Got Talent singer, 53, on fantasy duets with Pharrell Williams, achieving financial stability and settling down with a life partner

There’s no such thing as a typical weekend thanks to all the wonderful craziness that has happened since I entered Britain’s Got Talent five years ago. I’m away from home a lot, doing concerts, television and radio shows and all that can be unpredictable and very exciting. I’ve just come back from a six-week tour of America, for example. It was a hectic schedule, but I found time to visit Universal Studios and a highlight was the Jurassic Park rollercoaster – though no one told me about the 84-foot plunge at the end. That was scary, but awesome. I like to live a bit dangerously and get the adrenalin going.
Talking of which, I had one of the best Friday nights last month when I went to a Bryan Adams concert with friends. I adore him and although we didn’t get to meet after the show, I hope we may get to duet together in the future. It’s a very strange feeling, though, when I’m watching someone else perform and someone asks me for an autograph. It’s not a problem – people are really nice and if it makes them happy, job done.
I love being back at home in Blackburn, West Lothian, where I still live in the same house my eight brothers and sisters and I grew up in. I feel safe and comfortable there and it’s where I looked after Mum until her death seven years ago. We were incredibly close and I still feel she’s still around, looking out for me.
A perfect Friday night involves popping round to my best friend Lorraine’s house for a catch-up and natter. Occasionally we might go bowling together with a group of friends. It’s a good laugh and I love the atmosphere and the different kinds of people you meet there. Lorraine’s a landlady at a local pub and I’ve known her all my life. Since Britain’s Got Talent she’s been with me all the way, accompanying me on my tours, appearances and shoots. Sometimes we’ll treat ourselves to fish and chips and mushy peas.
A bit of Disney Channel before bedtime helps me wind down. I’m a big fan of cartoons like Mickey Mouse and I’ll often watch a classic comedy film like Elf. I wouldn’t mind Will Ferrell in my stocking at Christmas.
I love shopping and Saturdays are normally reserved for that. We have a great Designer Outlet nearby. I can wander around there for hours, just window shopping. I am partial to a nice fake fur coat, but I don’t go mad on designer clothes and expensive jewellery just because I have financial stability now. I’m still careful with money, although I love to splash out on Christmas presents for friends. But they know not to ask for anything silly like a Porsche – they’ll be lucky if they get a bicycle!
It takes me about four hours to get around a few shops because people are constantly stopping me to chat. But I never get bored of that. In fact it’s part of the joy of shopping these days, meeting people I’d never normally have spoken to. Mostly they’ll want to know when my next album’s out and a lot of people tell me I’m an inspiration. That’s the best thing.
It was a huge relief being diagnosed with Asperger’s last year, because I always thought I had brain damage from being starved of oxygen at birth. So it’s great if people who have some disability or problems in their life can look at me and think: “If she can live her dreams, then why can’t I?”
After shopping I might treat myself to a lovely hot stone massage, which just sends me to sleep.

Sometimes on Saturday nights I’ll go to the cinema, although I haven’t been for ages and I’m desperate to see Jersey Boys. I made my film debut last year alongside Dr Who star Sylvester McCoy in a movie called The Christmas Candle, and now I’m excited at the prospect of a film of my life. There’s a script and Meryl Streep is one of the names being tipped to play me, which is incredible. But it’s early days.
I’ll cook for friends when I have the time, which isn’t very often. I’m pretty good because I did a cookery course at catering college in my teens and then had a job for a while as an assistant cook. I always have a special dinner party one Saturday before Christmas for my good friends and family. My speciality is duck with orange sauce, very crispy roast potatoes and loads of vegetables. I am a bit of a “hostess with the mostest”, although I’ll never sing at my own parties. My drink of choice used to be brandy and lemonade, but there’s a rhyme that goes: “Brandy makes you randy, whisky makes you frisky.” So I stopped drinking brandy and started having a wee dram! But I’ll only have the one.
I love The X Factor and I’m rooting for the Italian fella, Andrea Faustini. I’ll dip into Strictly, although I’d never compete in it in a million years – I’ve got two left feet.
I’ll normally go to bed about midnight.
Sometimes I’ll work over the weekend if I have a television or radio appearance like performing live on Children in Need. Recently I was a guest on Terry Wogan’s Sunday morning radio show which was a thrill because I’ve had a bit of a crush on him since I was a teenager. He didn’t disappoint.
My Catholic faith has always been important to me. My parents were devout Catholics with very strong moral values and that influences the way I live my life. Going to mass and singing as part of the congregation is my favourite part of Sunday. I love it that people still treat me the same as they always have. Without the church I really don’t think I could focus properly, because it helps put everything in perspective for me, especially as my life has changed so drastically.
I still attend my local parish church religiously – pardon the pun – every week because Confession is a good way to offload and talk about any problems I have. It’s better than seeing a psychiatrist and it’s helped me become a better person. As I’ve got older I’ve started thinking about life hereafter. I want to end up in a good place because I want to see Mum again.
The sanctity of marriage is probably the value I hold dearest. My parents were married for 63 years (Dad died in 1997 and Mum 10 years later) and I’d really love to think that one day I will find my life partner. Up until now I haven’t met the right person, but I have been thinking more and more about meeting someone and settling down in the future. But marriage is not something to be taken lightly.
After church I’d ideally go for a walk to the nearby village of Bathgate a few miles away and visit my niece.
Sunday night I just sit back, relax and have a little bit of space for myself. It’s my time to reflect on all the wonderful, unexpected things that are happening to me. I still have to pinch myself sometimes.
Herbal tea or stiff drink?
Herbal tea, but a wee dram at weekends.

Always savoury – especially crisps.

A lady gave me a sock with a hole in it. No idea why, maybe she hoped I’d darn it for her.
Fantasy duet?
Pharrell Williams.
Most famous number on your phone?
Simon Cowell.
A talent you wish you had?
Acting. I’d love to do more in the future.

Funniest thing you’ve read about yourself?
I still crack up when I see pictures of myself at the first BGT audition wearing that gold dress with black tights and the fuzzy hair. I obviously got dressed with the lights out that day.
