Placido Domingo wins raves as 'Il Postino' goes home to Chile

Two years after starring in its premiere in Los Angeles, Placido Domingo brought “Il Postino,” the opera about the great Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, to Neruda's homeland.
The opera by the late Daniel Catan just concluded a run at the Municipal Theater of Santiago starring Domingo, who is L.A. Opera's general director. The performances featured other leading cast members from the L.A. production. Conducting is Grant Gershon, the resident conductor of Los Angeles Opera, who also led the orchestra for the L.A. premiere.
The opening night performance in Santiago won a “thunderous ovation” from a house that included Chilean President Sebastian Pinera and First Lady Cecilia Morel Montes, reported the La Tercera newspaper.
“We were lucky to have seen Domingo in a role that suits him, without the baritone incursions that definitely don’t suit him,” wrote the critic for La Segunda. “His Neruda was absolutely marvelous and, like his 1967 performances in “Carmen” and “Andrea Chenier,” those who were lucky enough to have seen it will remember it for the next 45 years as a great event.”
The critic for Las Ultimas Noticias said that hosting "Il Postino" "raises the Municipal Theater many rungs toward aligning it with the major theaters of the world….It’s glorious that [Domingo] has done it with a celebration of Neruda.”
And El Mercurio predicted that “the resounding success" of "Il Postino" will make Catan's opera “a title that’s sure to pack the Municipal Theater each time it’s mounted. It will be part of the collective unconsciousness.”
The international tour of "Il Postino" has also included Vienna’s Theater an der Wien, Theatre du Chatelet in Paris, Teatro Belles Artes in Mexico City and the Cervantino Festival in Guanajuato, Mexico. In May, “Il Postino” had its East Coast premiere, in a separate production by Philadelphia's Center City Opera Theater.
Domingo will cap his Chilean stay with a free concert Tuesday at Santiago’s Movistar Arena, joined by soprano Ana Maria Martinez. The English-language publication I Love Chile reported that crowds had begun lining up for tickets at 4 a.m. Sunday at three different distribution spots, five hours before they became available. The 9,412 seats were gone within minutes. Domingo had last sung in Chile in 2007.
In other Domingo news, Sony Classical announced this week that an album in which he sings duets with Josh Groban, Harry Connick Jr., Susan Boyle, Megan Hilty of NBC’s “Smash,” Welsh mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins, German singer-songwriter Xavier Naidoo and his son, Placido Domingo Jr., will be released Oct. 16. Domingo also will solo on some tracks, including “Besame Mucho,” which is listed as the closing number for his free show in Santiago.
Domingo has been in the pop-crossover duets game since his hit 1981 album, “Perhaps Love,” on which he sang the title track with its composer, John Denver. Denver also played guitar behind Domingo’s rendition of “Annie’s Song.” The album, among the first pop-oriented sallies by a modern opera star, sold more than 1.5 million copies in its first 18 months in the shops.

Beautiful Susan Boyle :)

It’s never too late to be who you might have been.
~George Eliot
In my childhood I used to wonder about this quote of Eliot. I used to think its just nonsense. However, as I grew, I understood how life gives you interesting tests and how we need to protect our dreams and why we should never give up, why we should believe in our dreams until we turn our dreams into reality. Above all…its never too late :)
Other day, came across wonderful video about Susan Boyle. I was immensely inspired by her story and her energy levels. I think, it would be nice if you can see the video by yourself :) . Check this major event in Susan Boyle’s life and stay inspired :)

Susan Boyle performs Duet with Elaine Paige
Here are the lyrics:
Nothing is so good it lasts eternally
Perfect situations must go wrong.
But this has never yet prevented me
From wanting far too much for far too long.
Looking back, I could have played it differently
Won a few more moments, who can tell.
But it took time to understand the man
Now at least I know, I know him well.
Wasn’t it good (Oh so good)
Wasn’t he fine (Oh so fine)
Isn’t it madness he can’t be mine.
But in the end, he needs a little bit more than me
More security (He needs his fantasy and freedom)
I know him so well.
No one in your life is with you constantly
No one is completely on your side.
And though I move my world to be with him
Still the gap between us is too wide.
Looking back, I could have played it differently
Learned about the man before I fell.
But I was ever so much younger then
Now at least I know, I know him well.
Wasn’t it good (Oh so good)
Wasn’t he fine (Oh so fine)
Isn’t it madness he won’t be mine
Didn’t I know how it would go,
If I knew from the start.
Why am I falling apart.
Wasn’t it good
Wasn’t he fine
Isn’t it madness he won’t be mine
But in the end, he needs a little more than me
More security (He needs his fantasy and freedom)
I know him so well
It took time to understand him
I know him so well

LONDON (AP) — Singing sensation Susan Boyle has been awarded an honorary doctorate from a Scottish university.
Boyle, who shot to fame on a TV talent show, wore blue-and-white academic robes as she accepted the degree Friday from Edinburgh's Queen Margaret University in recognition of her "contribution to the creative industries."
The singer once studied for a higher education certificate at the university.
A 40-something church volunteer from a small Scottish village, Boyle became a global sensation in 2009 after she performed the song "I Dreamed a Dream" from "Les Miserables" on the television program "Britain's Got Talent."
She has since sold 18 million records around the world and performed for audiences from the U.S. to China.

Dr. Ian C. Elliott
Graduation 2012
Last week I had the privilege of going to the QMU graduation ceremony. This is always a highlight of the year for me but this year was quite unique due to the presence of Susan Boyle who received an honorary degree.

This was publicised across the world (see The Jamaica Observer and The Washington Post) and generated a lot of interest in the graduation. What was particularly interesting was seeing paparazzi upon rubbish bins struggling to get a photograph of Susan. Most unusual!

After receiving her honorary degree Susan graciously left to attend other prior engagements. This enabled the focus for the rest of the day to be firmly on the graduating undergraduate and postgraduate students of 2012.

Great Picture of Susan.
Susan Boyle's Neighbors Want Her to Stop Singing
by Hannah Gilman, N.Y. | July 11, 2012 4:25 EDT

Susan Boyle
Susan Boyle's neighbors dreamed a dream: that the singer would stop singing. Teresa Miller and her fiancé, Paul Keaveney, who share a duplex wall with the 2009 standout of UK reality show Britain's Got Talent, have launched a noise complaint against the songster for singing at all hours of the day and night, calling her early morning tunes "unbearable."

The worst part? Boyle's belting covers of "Wild Horses," "Unchained Melody," and the song that started it all, "I Dreamed a Dream," has resulted in the Blackburn, West Lothian couple's inability to "hear the telly," according to The Sun.

Boyle purchased a $500,000 villa in Blackburn shortly after finishing second in Britain's Got Talent, but returned to her modest home a short six months later.

"I don't know if she has a karaoke machine or what, but it is loud. It goes on for hours. She'll play one song on repeat and play it again and again. It gets monotonous," said Miller in her interview with the UK publication.

This isn't the first time Miller and Keaveney have had beef with Boyle - revenge is suspected as a close friend says the neighbors "are the ones causing all the trouble" and have been having "almighty rows."

According to the unnamed ally, Boyle practices in her "posh house" and it's "very unlikely she would disturb the neighbors with her singing."

A spokeswoman for Boyle said "There is been no communication from the council so we are unaware if there even has been a complaint." According to The Sun, the West Lothian Council neglected to comment on the complaint.

Susan Boyle's Neighbors File Noise Complaint, Call Singing 'Unbearable'
The Huffington Post | By Posted: Updated: 07/11/2012 3:43 pm
Sounds like Susan Boyle might giving someone else Les Miserables.
Neighbors of the 'Britain's Got Talent' sensation have filed a noise complaint against Boyle claiming that her singing is too much to bear.
"I don't know if she has a karaoke machine or what but it is loud. It goes on for hours," complained Teresa Miller, 39, Boyle's neighbor in Blackburn, UK.
According to ABC News, Boyle has lived in the house for years — well before her breakout performance on 'Britain's Got Talent' — and reps claim she has a second, more posh home across town where she keeps her piano for practicing singing.
They also say the neighbor's whining is actually retaliation for a series of Boyle's noise complaints against Miller.

"This is a malicious complaint against Susan — nothing but tit for tat," reports the Sun.
A friend also told the Sun that Boyle has called the police on Miller and her fiancé Paul Keaveney several times after hearing them fighting.

"She was concerned they might hurt each other. She was scared."
ABC News confirmed that there's been an ongoing feud between the two neighbors. Miller said Boyle became different with her new-found stardom.

“She was alright for a month or two but then she went to America and totally changed,” said Miller, “I don’t hate her. I feel sorry for her," added Miller.

"She was a great neighbor when she moved away," said Keaveney.
Boyle was recently making headlines for an outburst at a busy motorway service station, reportedly over "distress and agitation" from a busy tour schedule.
At the end of June it was reported that she would be given an honorary degree from Edinburgh's Queen Margaret University for her contribution to the creative industries.

What Could Be Said About 'Ted'

Having heard of certain lines in the movie 'Ted' I have to wonder if it's a strong indication that we need to pause and reflect as a culture asking how far we've truly come down the path of enlightenment. Perhaps there's room for improvement? 'Ted' has scored pretty good at the box office. It's about a man and his talking Teddy bear and how he and his wife work their way through life's perplexing difficulties. It has an R rating largely due to it's vulgarity and offensive non-politically correct content. It's about a Teddy bear which has a tendency of expressing expletives and if such elements in a film gives you the fuzzies and the cuddlelies then I guess you should tuck yourself in with 'Ted'.

I'd say however there's something disturbing about this film something that begs the question if this is where the entertainment industry wants to be. Throughout it there are numerous demeaning and derogatory statements made about real life individuals, one of which is Susan Boyle. I'm reminded of the public outcry some time ago concerning the treatment bus monitor Karen Klein received as she was subjected to insults by a group of teenage adolescents. The world stood up and said, NO MORE! They wanted all to know in no uncertain terms that there genuinely is such a thing as unacceptable social behaviour...or at least we'd hope there would be from this time forth.

Shouldn't the writers or producers of "Ted" know that too? One line of dialogue takes it's liberties and refers to a fat kid as Susan Boyle. ALS groups have slammed 'Ted" where they expressed their reservations over the fact that one line of dialogue makes a flippant remark that they're hoping someone gets Lou Gehrig's disease. Funny stuff? To those with this horrible affliction I'm not sure they'd agree. Undoubtedly the writers of demeaning humour would hold that everybody should be able to take a joke. Should they not understand however that what's been viewed as acceptable today can always change with time? There was a day when classic entertainment was considered by many to be minstrel shows depicting blacks as inferiors or buffoonish in character. THAT CHANGED

People with strong convictions raised their voices altering the mindset of the culture taking a position that went cross grain from the status quo, that being that enough is enough. Society moved on. They progressed up to a higher stage of cultural enlightenment so much so that years later a black man actually became the President of one of the greatest nations on earth...the United States. Will entertainment or movies like "Ted" 100 years hence be viewed in the same light as a minstrel show would be today? Might the people of tomorrow be bewildered and mystified just how a society that had moved so far ahead in technological advancements could still be found so very wanting when it came to the basic understanding of leaving people with their sense of importance and dignity in tact?

Perhaps furture historians will even conclude that "B" instead of "R" would have more truly reflected 'Teds' designated rating....that is "B" meaning barbaric. One would hope as well they'd be able to point to certain numbers who stood up to be a catalyst for positive change. These ones had made a difference and dared to dream imagining that humanity could do better and be better than this. They'll see perhaps that there wasn't a change overnight but by patiently persisting through an ongoing series of small and seemingly insignificant baby steps they made the dream come true...More Light And Love Finally Found It's Way Into The World!

Susan Boyle got an honorary degree last week from Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh, Scotland, for her contributions to "creative industries."
And now, the Sun is reporting that SuBo's loud singing is bothering neighbors.

But the Sun is the tab that reported the much-picked-up report about a $20 million paycheck for Scarlett Johansson in a new Avengers film. And now her reps tell Gossip Cop there have been no salary discussions about The Avengers 2.

# ] Susan Boyle’s neighbors don’t like their free concerts
July 9th, 2012 under English Roses

(photo from WENN.com)

Not everyone is a fan of Susan Boyle’s big beautiful voice and her biggest naysayers are her neighbors. Her next door neighbors are so fed up with her singing that they took their complaint to the City Council. Her neighbors’ mum told The Sun, “It is so loud you can’t hear the telly. It’s unbearable. It’ll be on first thing in the morning or late at night and it’s absolutely blaring.” While most people would pay for that opportunity, seems these people would pay to silence her voice.
But there also seems to be more to the story, The Sun is reporting that the chart-topping singer had to call the police on the couple because they got in such a fight that she feared for their safety.
I guess you can say money doesn’t buy you good neighbors, especially if you
don’t move.

Thank You CandianBill

What a fantastic tribute to Susan Boyle by CanadianBill!

I was very impressed with the wonderful comments made by Candian Bill in this article that was posted on the SBFFII this morning.   He has summed up all we feel about Susan achieving her great honor.  She has already proven that she certainly deserved to be given this Honorary Degree from QMU.  Well written article: Wise, accurate and caring words about Susan Boyle. Thank you Canadian Bill

Why Susan Boyle Deserves Honorary Degree
Susan Boyle's honorary doctorate was awarded ' in recognition of her contribution to the creative industries' and 'for the relevance of her work to society at large'.

When Susan Boyle appeared on Britain's Got Talent in 2009, she became almost instantly world famous, thanks to her performance of 'I Dreamed A Dream' from Les Miserables which then appeared on YouTube. Via word of mouth, news of her performance quickly spread and it became the most viewed YouTube video of the year. In fact, to this day, no other performer has so quickly reached 90 million views as Susan did.

She did not win the show, but placed second. She went on to tour with the BGT show a few weeks later, performing in 22 of 28 shows on the tour.

She then immediately recorded her first album, which became the best selling album of 2009 in just six weeks, and the best selling debut album by a female in history. She also became the oldest person in history (48) to have her debut album open at #1. Susan won the 'Gold Disc Award' for top international artist in Japan, and the 'Golden Chinese Music Award' as most influential international artist in China. Her second album, 'The Gift' made her the first woman in history to have her first 2 albums open at #1 on both sides of the Atlantic within one year. She also became the first woman in USA charting to reach #1 on Billboard 200 with a holiday album Her third album, 'Someone to Watch Over Me', made her the first woman in 65 years of UK charts to have her first three albums debut at #1 in less than 2 years. Her first three albums have all placed in the top 5 on Billboard 200, USA. Her first two albums have both received Grammy nominations. She was the best selling UK artist in the world in both 2009 and 2010. In her first 14 months alone, she sold 14 million albums and Sony presented her with a huge plaque to honor the achievement. To date (less than 3 years) she has over 120 platinum and gold records in 38 countries with sales estimated between 18 and 20 million.

In Scotland she has twice won 'Scot of the Year' competitions and was presented with an 'Outstanding Achievement' award at the 2011 Scottish Variety Awards.

Along with such success, she performed throughout Europe, Japan, China, Australia and the USA. She released an autobiography. In 2012 a stage musical about her life opened. Titled 'The Susan Boyle Stage Musical, I Dreamed A Dream', it toured for 11 weeks and received excellent reviews from both the critics and audience members across the UK and Ireland. It starred Scottish actress Elaine C Smith, with Susan appearing at the end at some performances, singing two songs. The musical will reopen in Scotland in the fall, with future dates to be announced.

The 3 writers of the song, 'I Dreamed A Dream' and the producer of Les Miserables, are all on record crediting Susan with reviving interest in Les Miserables. After a very long run around the world, ticket sales had been in serious decline with some theatres considering closing the show. After the astounding coverage she received via YouTube, ticket sales soared around the world. Lyrics writer Alain Boublil said in fact, that for Les Mis, Susan Boyle was 'a gift from heaven'. Alain Boublil Music Ltd. granted Susan Boyle the rights to use the song and the title in the musical about her own life; it is not difficult to understand why.

It would be impossible now to count the views of Susan's original audition video, so many versions have been uploaded, some have been withdrawn. However, in October, 2010, almost a year and a half after it first aired, a version was uploaded titled 'One of the Best Inspirational Videos Ever' and to date has received over 62 million additional views all by itself. Many people have been inspired by Susan's courage in the face of adversity, and there are endless blogs to prove it, relating how people have returned to university as mature students, begun writing/painting/singing, etc, or even begun to travel late in life, all because they have been inspired by her example.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSrAJsWvEIc

Susan has also in her very short public life been involved extensively in a number of charities. We can know only those which use her face/appearance or name - what she does privately of course we can't know, but her public record is already extensive.

In 2010 with less than a year of professional experience under her belt Susan performed live before a crowd of 70,000 people and an internet/television audience estimated at one billion at the Papal Mass in Scotland. She has also performed for and been presented to the Prince of Wales, and the Queen - at Windsor Palace for her Diamond Jubilee.
And all of this is because she dared to dream a dream. And never gave up.
Honoured ... Susan Boyle
