Les Miserables star Anne Hathaway inspired by Susan Boyle's famous performance

HATHAWAY, who plays Fantine in the upcoming blockbuster, says she used to watch Boyle's take on I Dreamed a Dream when she was having a bad day.

LONG before she was cast in Les Miserables, Anne Hathaway was a fan of Susan Boyle’s hit version of one of the musical’s knockout numbers.
The star – who first grabbed the limelight in The Princess Diaries – was very aware of Susan’s performance of I Dreamed a Dream on Britain’s Got Talent.
She said: “I’m breathing so of course I know who Susan Boyle is. I think she is wonderful and adorable. Her story is so heartwarming.
“Before I knew we were doing this movie, I used to watch that video clip of her singing I Dreamed A Dream when I was having a low day. It made me feel so wonderful.
“She was brilliant but what was also fun was to watch Simon Cowell’s mind racing as both producer and an adding machine.”
The 30-year-old actress, who plays Fantine in the film, also revealed that she has spent most of her life in love with the music of Les Mis.
She said: “My experience with it began when I was seven and my mother was cast in the national US tour of Les Miserables. She played a factory girl and was the understudy for Fantine.
“So the introduction to the show was in my living room. Then I got to see my mom play the role of Fantine and I have seen the show many times since.”
Preparing for the movie musical meant that Anne put herself through the mill, physically and emotionally.
Her character is forced to sell her only possessions and even her hair and herself in order to feed her daughter, Cosette.
To be convincing in the role, the already slim star shed almost two stone and had her hair shorn.
She also delved deep into research about the suffering of women through the centuries – and that made harrowing reading.

Hugh Jackman: Starring role in Les Miserables fulfils my lifetime ambition

She said: “Sometimes you have so much in common with your character that it feels like you should return your pay cheque. This was not one of those times.
“I had to go very deep inside myself to some uncomfortable places. I did a lot of research on the history of the period and what it was like to be a woman then.
“For Fantine’s descent into the gutter, I turned to modern research, specifically the lives of sex slaves. Reading their accounts put me in a place of apathy and horror.
“There are things I read that I will never forget. In the interviews with women, the emotions that come out are undeniably shame, pain and deep, barely contained rage.”
At the start of the production, Anne had assured director Tom Hooper that she was prepared to have her flowing locks chopped off for the film
At the time, though, it hadn’t dawned on her that it would mean she would be a short-haired bride when she stepped down the aisle in September with American actor Adam Shulman.
But Anne coped even though she admits that, on the day of the hair cutting, she was shaking like a leaf.
She added: “I was so scared. But then we cut my hair and it was done.
“Now I’m exploring a whole new life. I’m having a nice time not spending an hour on my hair every morning. But I have become obsessed with my nails as a result.”
