Scots music stars cash in at Xmas with wacky merchandise

Susan Boyle
Cashing in ... Susan Boyle

IT’S no secret that rock albums and pop singles aren’t selling like they used to.

So Scotland’s star names in the music world have to make cash any way they can — some classy, some cringeworthy.
And they’re capitalising on the lucrative Christmas market by flogging wacky merchandise to their legions of fans through their own official stores.
Here, CHRIS SWEENEY checks out what diehard punters are snapping up, to put under their trees this year...

Amy MacDonald
OPTIMIST Amy is clearly NOT targeting her Scots fans.
She’s massive all over Europe and must be going for them, after releasing her own range of personalised sunglasses, which come in three colours — red, black and white.
They’re £12 a pair and feature Amy’s signature on one of the legs.
Covering all bases, Amy also has her own range of tea towels for the less edgy fan.

IT just proves even shifting albums isn’t enough these days.
SuBo’s sold more than 18million albums and earned more than £20million.
But she’s still got some garish bright red hoodies up for grabs at £17.99, there’s also a big picture of her face on the back so everyone knows who’s camp your in.
Fish
THE royalties from his string of 80s hits must be drying up as the ex-Marillion frontman is punting his personalised car tax holder for £2.39 including VAT. His logo and website address is on both sides. Amazingly it’s on the list of his most popular items.
Coming top is his 2003 album Field of Crows on CD.

Snow Patrol
ABANDONING the bog standard gig T-shirts, the band have got creative.
They’ve come out with a range of body warmers.
And just so no one’s in any doubt where it’s from — it’s got the band’s name and their snowflake logo plastered on the front.
But it’s not cheap, it’ll set you back a steep £45.
The View
DUNDEE’S finest want their fans to beat the winter blues.
They can turn up at the band’s gigs all warm and toasty, by wearing The View’s scarf.
It’s got the band name on one side and their infamous chant ‘The View Are on Fire’ on the other.
Even better, it’s on sale right now for a bargain £5.
Bay City Rollers
THEY never did things subtly — and they still aren’t.
Singer Les McKeown has branched off and on his own website is flogging some horrendous kit. The pick of the bunch is £5.99 Les McKeown Tartan Rosette, which includes a picture of a fresh faced Les in the middle.
Another cracker is the Tartan wrist scarf — it comes in Royal Stewart, Blue and Black Watch tartans.
Again it’s cheap as chips, £6.99 for a scarf which comes with frayed edges for stylish effect.
Wet Wet Wet
THE 90s heroes have gone for the cheap and cheerful approach.
Leading the way is their celebratory 25-year temporary tattoo.
It only costs a budget-friendly 50 pence — less than a first class stamp to post it out.
Also on their store is their Lucky The Lion stuffed toy.
He even comes decked out in a Wet Wet Wet rugby shirt — a snip surely at just £15.
Hue and Cry
THE golden oldies are going for it this Christmas — BIG style.
They’ve released their “exceptionally limited flight case” which is jam-packed full of swag that any Hue and Cry fan would be over the moon with.
Here’s the treasure trove inside, — three CDs, three DVDs, a certificate, a 2013 calendar, a mug, a souvenir backstage pass, a set list, a plectrum, a commemorative ticket and a celebratory poster.
The highlight is the Songs From Our Father DVD which is described as “Pat Kane filmed performing songs sang to him by his father when he was young in a cappella style.” You couldn’t ask for anything else — and it’s all yours for £99.99.
Darius Campbell
THE reality TV star has never lacked confidence.
And he’s still got plenty of that judging by his offering.
It will cost you £16.90 plus delivery to get your digitally printed photo which features an exact COPY of Darius’ autograph. On the poster they add your name and message — and again using top technology, it’s printed in Darius’ handwriting.

Emeli Sande
OUR current superstar is keeping the money making ventures classy — just like her outstanding career.Standing out is her £8 rose brooch — made out of pewter.
And it ties in nicely with the artwork from Emeli’s upcoming live album.
Simple Minds
JIM Kerr and the lads have used their brains.
Not only are they flogging merchandise but it’s practical too.
Topping the list is their £2.50 branded Greatest Hits card wallet.
Fans can use it for credit, donor and membership cards.
But even better, if you put your travel card in it — you DON’T need to remove it, the design allows you to swipe it while it’s still in there.
Now’s that’s Alive and Kicking!
Garbage
LED by Edinburgh rock chick Shirley Manson, the US-based band aren’t messing about.
They’ve got their own silver jewellery range — featuring their own logo, an uninspired G.
The pick of the bunch is their matching necklace and earring set.
Annie Lennox
DIVA Annie has taken the leap and gone into home goods.
She’s not as active in the music world as in her chart-topping days, so is pushing the boat out to keep the bank manager happy.
Annie has her own range of bone china Espresso Cups and Saucers — £20 for one and £35 a pair.
You can even add Annie’s touch to your Christmas tree with a £10 red bauble — which features her official logo.
Franz Ferdinand
THE lads all met at art school and have always been smart cookies.
And evidently their fans are too.
As the band have avoided any tacky gear and have done their own £3 sliding puzzle.
Paolo Nutini
DESPITE being one of the richest musicians under 30, with an estimated £8million fortune, Paolo still wants more by cornering the cheap wristband market.
He’s flogging the tacky £3 bands which are described as “blue fabric with Paolo Nutini printed in white multiple times”.
The Paisley crooner has also got a dazzling red rubber version with his name printed in black. You could have one on each arm.
