New Album Review: Susan Boyle – Standing Ovation (The Greatest Songs From The Stage)

Susan BoyleFreddie Matthews writes from London: When it comes to Susan Boyle I have to listen to the vocal and pretend to myself that I have never seen her, otherwise it all goes horribly wrong. There are reasons why your record label uses photography from far away in the frame. That may well be a cruel thing to say but the voice and image have no synergy. Maybe that’s one of the reasons she was mocked by Simon Cowell when she first appeared on the 2009 Britain’s Got Talent audition; that and her strange but probably nervous at the time personality. That debut audition You Tube shock performance of ‘I Dreamed A Dream’, from Les Misérables, achieved several hundred million views. Despite losing to dance troupe Diversity in the BGT final, that second place made absolutely no difference for Susan Boyle’s future success whatsoever. Her singing career was about to explode worldwide.
In the first year of Susan Boyle’s singing career she released her debut album, I Dreamed A Dream, and it quite literally was a sales dream. The album was the second biggest seller in the USA in 2009 with 3.1 million, which was just 100,000 behind Taylor Swift’s Fearless. Worldwide the amazing album sold over 9 million copies. The record industry awards came flooding in and the album also became the fastest-selling debut album ‘ever’ in the UK, beating a record previously held by Leona Lewis with her album Spirit.
Susan Boyle’s singing career has progressed at a shattering pace and velocity. In fact she is a singing phenomenon, yet she still insists on living in the same home where she has lived with her parents for 44 years. It’s either totally down to earth or complete stupidity. After all Susan Boyle is now worth over £22 million.
She is what all women of a certain age wish they could be, credible again and not just dismissed as ‘middle aged’. In a battle against the popular youth culture of today, Susan Boyle has won hands down.
The new album is much more accessible than any of her previous material and that’s partly thanks to her new producer Richard ‘Biff’ Stannard. This X-Factor producer has changed Boyle’s style and perception. Standing Ovation is an easier listen for the masses. The show-stopping ballads you’d expect naturally remain but the production and instrumentation are lighter and there’s less musical emotion whilst the vocal retains the sung emotion, if that makes sense?
Susan BoyleThis album not only features vocal mastery from Susan Boyle but we’re also treated to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s original The Phantom of The Opera star Michael Crawford duetting on the song; The Music of The Night which very much sounds like the original although, dare I say it, Boyle’s vocal is far superior to that of Sarah Brightman’s. There also a couple of songs featuring Donny Osmond, All I Ask of You and This Is The Moment, although at times Donny seems to get the bigger parts when this is supposed to be Susan Boyle’s album: typical.
If you like Broadway and West End musicals alike then you’ll love other songs to feature on this album like: Somewhere Over The Rainbow; Send In The Clowns; Memory; You’ll Never Walk Alone and As Long As He Needs Me but there’s also bizarrely the popular music classic, The Winner Takes It All, by Abba which helps mix things up a little.
If I had one, I’d take my hat off to Susan Boyle for just about keeping her life on track to provide the music-loving world with such an amazing product.
It may have taken her 48 years to be discovered but what a discovery and signing she has been for Simon Cowell’s record label SYCO. Let’s just hope with her market power she tells him the score from time to time. After all he needs her more than she needs him.
If musicals are your thing, you will love Susan Boyle’s Standing Ovation and if not, you may just surprise yourself.
