ALEX Salmond has enjoyed a cup of tea there and Susan Boyle has performed a couple of songs there.
But it was lifting the title of Sunday Mail Pub of the Year that delivered a truly terrific year for the Tartan Arms.
Today, we launch the search for this year’s winner, the pub in Scotland that customers believe is the best bar none.
Reigning champ John McQue says the accolade has meant the world to his Bannockburn pub, which has been in the family for more than 125 years.
He said: “Our customers voted for us to get the prize and that felt great. We don’t put ourselves forward for awards. I was so proud of everyone.
“And it’s definitely been a boost in business for us. We’ve still got the loyal customer base that helped us win the award but we’ve had lots of people coming to us just because they heard we are Pub of the Year.”
The Tartan Arms was named Scotland’s favourite at the DRAM Licensed Trade Awards last year after Sunday Mail readers sent hundreds of nominations for their favourite local.
Set in the main street of Bannockburn, Stirlingshire, it’s a pub at the heart of the community, with darts teams, a social club, football teams, a dominoes team and a bustling restaurant area serving great grub.
Then there’s the famous cabaret nights which attracted the attention of singer Susan Boyle.
John said: “Susan came in unannounced and agreed to sing us a couple of songs as long as there were no photos taken.
“I returned the favour and did a number myself, Human by The Killers, which is my party piece.
“I told her if I’d been discovered when I was younger, I would probably be at the Hydro by now. But she said she was glad I sold ear plugs behind the bar.”
The Tartan Arms staff, many of whom have worked there for decades, provide a warm welcome and a great atmosphere, which helped the pub steal a march on the competition. For John, 67, who runs the Arms with brother Joe, winning held a special significance as recognition of the hard work the family have put in over the years – particularly his elderly mother Isa.
John said: “I was proud of everyone when we won, the whole team, but I was most pleased for my mum, who’s 90 now and who kept the business going at one stage when all us kids were young. Pub of the Year was a nice reward for her.”
Landing the top prize was a step-up for the Tartan Arms, 37 years after it won an accolade in one of our previous contests. The local was named Sunday Mail Pub of the Month in 1976 and the winner’s mirror still hangs in a prominent position in the bar.
It now has a bigger, better version, with the famous Pub of the Year 2013 gantry mirror displayed in the restaurant alongside photos from the glittering DRAM awards night.
John said: “We have a twin set. They balance each other well. It looks great.
“Lots of people are curious about the Pub of the Year and come in to try out the place. Then, luckily enough, they seem to come back again.
“We’re near the new Battle of Bannockburn visitor centre and it’s 700 years since the famous battle. It’s a good time for us.”
