Starry eyed

Date

Ruth Ritchie

Bright young things with grand dreams looking for a break make for great viewing.
SMASH
A big song and dance … the cast of Smash, a well-made drama following the staging of a Broadway musical about the life of Marilyn Monroe.
What was it the man said to Ruby Keeler in 1933? ''You're going out a youngster, but you've got to come back a star.'' 42nd Street's most famous line has grown into a genre that has spawned several industries. Overnight stardom might not have existed before Broadway, or until Hollywood made myths about Broadway. There's the chorus girl whose life changes when the star flails over the footlights on opening night. And the bad girl who trips on the casting couch and never gets up again. Mostly, we love the waitress who just needs that one break - a chance to show the world and become rich, famous and hot before our eyes.
Susan Boyle settled for two out of three, but she's proof the dream lives on. Talent contests have dominated prime-time ratings seasons for the past decade. The package becomes more elaborate and far-fetched with varying degrees of success.
No point in mentioning Everybody Dance Now when So You Think You Can DanceUruguay's Got Talent and the juggernaut Idol franchise make stars and millions for networks every season. The best dream on offer this ratings season is a well-made drama about the casting and staging of a Broadway musical about Marilyn Monroe. Smash (Seven, Tuesday, 9.30pm) has everything: singing, dancing, sex, Anjelica Huston, a chorus girl with a dream, a sleazy director with a well-worn casting couch and an emerging star who got her break on, you guessed it, American Idol. And it looks expensive and shiny. Busby Berkeley would be proud.
There's so much to love about Smash - unless you hate musicals. A terrific cast, led by Debra Messing, Jack Davenport and strong newcomers Katharine McPhee and Megan Hilty, mixes catfights with tap routines to great effect. In spite of every imaginable cliche, we're never entirely sure if the show will go on.
If only Smash were preceded by the equally delightful, camp-but-not-cheesy I Will Survive (Ten, Wednesday, 7.30pm), which I fear might be floundering on the wrong network. My teenage son keeps mistaking this road trip full of drag queens for a similarly named series about people who come back from the brink of death at the hands of an axe murderer. There's much more at stake in I Will Survive, and a better class of nutter. All the contestants, mentors, judges and town residents are larger than life and thoroughly entertaining.
The writer and director of the previous incarnations of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Stephan Elliott, could nearly take this on the road as a one-man show, he's such flash talent.
This format is lifted from a successful British show where unknowns competed to land the role of Maria in a West End production of The Sound of Music. But this is a thousand times better. Very few of these contestants have experience in drag, so the Mrs Doubtfire factor makes for plenty of laughs among the show tunes. The elimination rounds that take place in a different Australian country town each week remind us why the original Priscilla concept had such sexy (albeit hairy) legs. A few blocks either side of Oxford Street, mums and dads don't see so much drag. Can they take it at face value or will bigotry prevail?
And, finally, the camaraderie beneath the falsies is something a bit beautiful to watch. This is an unlikely team of blokes, with shared passions and skills, just like other teams, and then again, not. These men couldn't be more different from one another, and yet they are united by that singular dream - to walk into an outback RSL unknown and walk out a star, with all their teeth intact.

X Factor star reveals meeting Susan Boyle was an honour

Amelia Lily is a big fan of Scottish singing sensation Susan Boyle and when she flew into Glasgow to promote new single You Bring Me Joy earlier this month, the 17-year-old had nothing but praise for the BGT star.
Amelia was introduced to Susan when she was performing as part of the X Factortour in Glasgow earlier this year.
She gushed: “She’s an absolute hero it was such an honour to meet her.”
Susan was attending the show with her family and she made no secret of the fact she is a big fan of the talent series, in particular Amelia Lily.
While the show was on air last year, Susan told Digital Spy: “I am watching the show this year - well, I'm having to Sky+ the show because I've been travelling so much.
“I'm supporting Amelia this year. I think she's great and I'm glad she is back in the show."
Susan’s life changed forever after she auditioned for Britain’s Got Talent back in 2009, but it could have been a very different story as she originally auditioned for The X Factor.
In an interview with Ok! magazine, the 51-year-old admitted: “Funnily enough I did go for it, but there were too many people so they told me about another show which catered for a wider audience, Britain’s Got Talent. It was the perfect window for me.”
It was indeed and our beloved SuBo is now one of the most successful artists in the world, currently splitting her time between working on her new album and making the odd appearance in the musical about her life: I Dreamed a Dream.
Tonight, Susan is set to perform at the Champions League match between Celtic and Sweden’s Helsingborgs at Parkhead.
A huge Celtic fan, the Scots star can’t wait to belt out the club’s anthem You’ll Never Walk Alone.

Susan Boyle to hit a high note at Celtic’s crunch Champions League match

What a dream: Susan Boyle will sing for her football legends Celtic tomorrow nightKen McKay/Thames/Rex Features
Susan Boyle will sing her heart out at tomorrow’s tense Champions League match between Celtic and Sweden’s Helsingborgs at Parkhead.
The Celtic-daft singing sensation will perform the club’s anthem You’ll Never Walk Alone ahead of the second leg Euro play-off on Wednesday night.
It’s not the first time global star Susan will take to the pitch in front of her team, previously taking part in the half-time draw at Parkhead three years ago.
But this will be the first time the Blackburn-based star will sing for her footie legends.
Back in 2009, a proud Susan waved a Celtic scarf above her head as she embraced the massive crowds.
And they’ll no doubt welcome her back with open arms, as she makes her big return to serenade them.
A spokesman for Celtic told the Daily Record: “Susan is thrilled to be singing in front of her fellow supporters. It will be a great way to set the scene.”
Aside from supporting Celtic, Susan has been keeping herself busy with the tour of I Dreamed A Dream, The Susan Boyle Musical, a stage show which charts the 51-year-old’s amazing rise to fame following her time on Britain’s Got Talent.
Starring Elaine C Smith in the lead role as the 51-year-old, Susan also makes a personal appearance, singing two of her massive hits at the end of the show.
Touring around the country, with the first Scottish date taking place in Aberdeen in April, the story focuses on all parts of Susan’s life, from her upbringing in a close-knit family and her early foray into singing as a schoolchild, right up to Susan's meteoric rise to fame.
I Dreamed a Dream comes to Edinburgh’s Festival Theatre from September 21-29 and Glasgow’s King’s Theatre from October 1-13.

SUSAN BOYLE fans all over the world are getting behind a racehorse named after the singer.
The three-year-old bay filly is aiming to win her second race today after coming from behind to record a surprise victory in her first outing a fortnight ago.
She can hardly hope to compete with her namesake’s multi-million pound earnings however as the first prize for both races is only about £1,500.

Susan Boyle the racehorse, trained by Kirstin Barclay, competes in the tough sport of harness racing in New Zealand.
After winning her debut outing at Invercargill, on the country’s South Island, some of Miss Boyle’s global legion of fans have adopted the horse as a mascot.
Many have been watching an online video of the race, with one reporting: “She came from close to the back of the pack to win.”
Another fan on the web forum Susan Boyle Fans International wrote: “Yippee! A lucky name, indeed!” Now, with Susan Boyle due to race again today at Gore fans are pleading with her trainer to keep them up to date with the filly’s career.

Lothians luminaries talk of future Scotland hopes

a HOST of well-known names from the Lothians have contributed to a book which details their hopes for the future of Scotland.
Crime writer Ian Rankin, singing sensation Susan Boyle and East Lothian MSP Iain Gray made comments, as did Olympic rowing champion and former Edinburgh University student Katherine Grainger.
Callum Smith, a former charity worker from West Dunbartonshire, is behind the project, titled Hopes of a Nation, which also features an entry from First Minister Alex Salmond.
In his entry, Mr Gray, former Scottish Labour leader, wrote: “I was privileged to be one of 129 MSPs in our new parliament in 1999. I hope we can use it to make Scotland fairer, more equal, happier – just better! Then I hope we look out to the world to make it better too – never inward looking, never parochial, always reaching out.”
Mr Smith, 44, will donate all profits from sales and downloads of the book to the Children’s Hospice Association Scotland.
He said: “The idea that any child is born into any community in Scotland with no hope is abhorrent to me and this is why I am purusing the project.”
