2009 Comments posted in Huffpost Social News about Susan's performance of I Dreamed A Dream.
It is interesting to review and re-read some thoughts of how people felt at that time.  Today, many feel  delighted and are very impressed at Susan's success.  What fantastic accomplishments she has completed in less then four years.

“I first saw this video here, on Huffington, late in the evening on April 16th and, like everyone else, was blown-away. I watched it a dozen more times throughout the day on the 17th, becoming still-and-everso choked-up with each viewing. Then I decided not to watch it again for a few days to see what my reaction would be after letting the first flush of incredible emotion subside.

It's now late in the evening of the 19th, and I just watched it again. And, again, I am reduced to tears by Susan's performance of 'I Dreamed a Dream' from Les Miserables.

I said it before, and I'll say it again... a stunning, stellar, soul-piercing performance.

Yeah, folks... Susan's as real as real can get. Her shining star has blessed us all with the timeless reminder that dreams can, and do, come true, that hope does spring eternal, and that having faith in our own light is the precious conviction we must all recognize in ourselves and in each other.

God bless this woman for restoring that in me.”

“FaireMaiden, I agree wholeheartedly with everything you've expressed here about Susan's performance. We need her art now more than ever I believe. How blessed we are to have such an authentic role model to remind us we all have gifts to share if only we choose to.

Here's to Susan...three grateful cheers and a heart made lighter by your voice, your lovely presence, and your spunk! :-) Thank you for being a woman of courage.”
“That's quite an unfair assumption. Believe it or not, there are those of us in the world for whom 'looks' has never been a measure of anything.

For me, perhaps it was because I was raised with handicapped people in my household, as well as mentally-challenged people. I learned very early that not all that glitters is gold. Or, perhaps I just have some kind of innate sense of being able to see a person's soul or heart or whatever. But 'looks' has never been a consideration for me.

That doesn't mean that I can't recognize, or appreciate, the 'superficial prettiness' of something... art, people, etc etc. But beauty is something else... for me, that comes from inside and is more like a 'radiant' energy. I don't know. I'm not explaining it well.

In any case, I'm thankful that NiceguyEddie has had this awakened in him. It can only help him in his life, to be able to shift his perception, his discernment. I suspect that, for a lot of people, this has been awakened in them as well because of Susan, and that's a good thing.”

“Being a yank, I don't know anything about the Queen's medals, but surely there must be something for bravery? for courage? for heroism? In the face of being alone, after all those years of taking care of her parents, not singing for the past two years since her mother's death (so devastated was she), to finally crawl out of her shell and join life again, albeit a very uncertain one for her, step onto that stage and give it all she's got... well... I think bravery, courage, and heroism are indeed honours that would be well-bestowd upon Susan.

She truly is an inspiration to us all.”

“How wrong you are. I'm a boomer and my son, 31 years old, cried when he heard Susan. My 15-year-old step-daughter and I watched the video together and can't stop crying either. She's a musician herself... plays guitar, sings, writes songs, loves pop-stuff... but also has an appreciation for beauty, in all its forms.

Don't count the younger-generation out quite yet. They, just like us, are partially a product of their times. We had rock n' roll, which our parents thought for sure was sending the world to hell in a handbasket, *lol*

But we grew up to appreciate more than the hormone-infested drivel that is usually attributed to teen-age pop-world.

My step-daughter has been calling all her friends telling them to watch Susan, and then yak on and on about it, as teenagers are wont to do, *lol*

These kids will be just fine. They'll grow up, learn like we did that not all that glitters is gold, and be richer and wiser for the experience.”

“Perhaps in your 'personal world' it's okay to do that. However, in the humane world, it is never appropriate to make fun of, to ridicule, to humiliate another... most especially for something so superficial as 'looks'.

I pray that when you have children, you will teach them better than what you are stating here. It doesn't matter if someone has a special 'talent' or not, each and every person on the planet deserves to be accorded respect and kindness. Friendship, and peace, begins with a sincere gesture of courtesy... courtesy that is founded on recognizing the inherent dignity in each of us.”

“I'm barren, so no need to be concerned that the wind might carry my demon seed any further than the cozy basket of my American Apparel briefs. For what it's worth, though, I do agree with you in principle. But I do find something revoltingly self-congratulatory about the media frenzy surrounding Ms. Boyle.”

“Typical narcissistic reply. 'Nuthin' wrong with me, you're the one's who are twisted'. Jeez.

Alas, let me enlighten you. You have reduced this entire woman's 'being' to her voice, of which there are those who sing better and those who sing worse. Truly, what can one expect from a small-minded person, such as yourself, but a small-minded critique?

Susan is not a sensation because people feel bad or guilty for misjudging her. If that were the case, they'd just say, 'sorry', and be done with it. She's a sensation because the totality of her 'being', expressed thru her extremely-emotive vocalizatioin, has chops.

The point is this: the entirety of her 'being' is what's inspirational. Why? Precisely because she's not 20-something, not beautiful-looking, not precocious, not pretentious, not your typically-conceited 'aren't I just wonderful' pain-in-the-a$$ diva.

She is sweet, she is sincere, she is guileless. And radiates a largesse of heart and soul rarely witnessed in this day and age.

Too bad the same can't be said for you.”

“Have to agree with MCMetal on your apples-to-oranges critique... what, indeed, is wrong with you?”

“Kenji... I don't think 'I Dreamed a Dream' is a horrible song and, by the sounds of it, neither does anyone else. I think you're kind of out on your own there. As for Susan's quaver, yes, it is there. But I will chalk some of that up to nervousness, and the rest to perhaps a lack of training?

In any case, as you well know when it comes to show biz, it's not just the voice, it's the whole package. She's a sensation because a) she does have a powerful voice, b) she's 47-years-old, c) she's absolutely sweet, d) because of her innocence, she is so very emotive, and e) she had the guts to give it a shot.

I thought Susan's choice of 'I Dreamed a Dream' was so appropos. It seems she's had this dream all her life and, even if this takes her nowhere, which I highly doubt, she still had this one bright and shining moment in her life... and we were privy to it. Indeed, I feel very blessed to have witnessed Susan's dream come alive.”

“Wiserone... it doesn't matter. All that matters is whether you were surprised, and gladly so. Show biz is show biz... and all the phoney-baloney glitz and glamour of 'putting on a show, putting on airs, putting on a face, acting real when all is fake' is immaterial. How Susan got on that stage, and who knew what, and when, fades into oblivion. That we were blessed with the good fortune to hear her magnificience makes all the rest of it pale.”
