Final Word: We can all dream our own dreams, too...
Columnist Craig Wilson discusses the difference between Susan Boyle's 'I Dreamed a Dream' and Anne Hathaway's movie version in 'Les Miserables.'
Like millions of Americans in this digital age, I am easily distracted.
In less than five minutes I can leave my desk, get coffee, return, check my e-mail and go on YouTube for a little musical inspiration. Give me 10 minutes and I'll throw in a load of clothes and make lunch.
For several years now, one of my favorite "diversions" has been Susan Boyle's 2009 appearance on Britain's Got Talent in which the frumpy Scot famously steps onto the stage and belts out I Dreamed a Dream from Les Misérables, blowing everyone away.
I know the clip by heart, from judge Simon Cowell's early dismissal of her to the audience's rousing standing ovation at the end. Her performance, which has 115 million visits so far on YouTube — a million of those are most likely mine — never fails to move me. I always end up with a tear in my eye, inspired enough to get back to work and whatever task there is at hand.
I was reminded of Boyle's performance the other day when I saw Les Misérables, the movie. There, on the screen, was Anne Hathaway, also telling us that she, too, has a dream. Or did.
I'll confess she actually does a lovely job, but she's no Susan Boyle. Where's that matronly brown dress?
Hollywood has once again done what Hollywood does best with such musicals. More. (Remember Barbra Streisand warning us not to rain on her parade atop that tugboat plying New York Harbor in Funny Girl?)
One critic called Les Misérables "all very big, all the time," and claimed that when we were all done dabbing any tears away after the big numbers, we might actually wonder whether we felt like we'd just been flattened by a runaway train rather than being uplifted.
Les Miserables is also way too long — 157 minutes — which translates to more than 50 trips away from my desk and just a tad fewer laundry runs. That's a lot of Tide over the dam.
But I had a dream, too, sitting in that dark theater the other day. I dreamed I was back home, listening to Susan Boyle on YouTube, waiting for Simon to be made the fool.
