Susan Boyle, the singer who became an overnight success after her performance on Britain’s Got Talent went viral on YouTube, is joining the ranks of legends like Billy Joel, the Beatles, and Queen by getting her own musical.
The show, called “I Dreamed a Dream” after the Les Miserables song that launched the 51 year old into the hearts of millions, premiered at the end of March to largely positive reviews.
About a girl
The show opened at Newcastle’s Theatre Royal, and has been called “a delight that deserves to go far, and fast, as she [Boyle] has done” in a five-star review from the Daily Telegraph.
The overnight international sensation is played by Elaine Smith, who’s most famous for her work in TV programme “Rab C. Nesbitt.” However, Susan Boyle herself makes an appearance at the finale, much to delight of her fans. The 51 year old enjoys a fan base that is large and varied thanks to her large exposure on YouTube, with fans coming places as far-off as Australia just to see the musical.
The actress who plays Boyle said that the musical should help fans realise the kinds of difficulties Boyle had to suffer, both before and after she became a star, and understand her better as a person. Smith also said that the show is meant to be “theatrical and magical and tell the fairy story but tell the darkness of it as well.”
Don’t judge a book
The actress went on to talk about Susan Boyle’s world-wide appeal: “it was about judging a book by its cover,” she said about Boyle’s initial appearance on Britain’s Got Talent.
“You had to be tall, thin, blonde, gorgeous, and talent didn’t matter anymore… It made us all sit back and say, ‘Oh wait a minute, talent matters,” she went on. From that first inspiring moment on Britain’s Got Talent, Susan has gone on to sell millions of records and has become a household name. The fame took its toll on her in the beginning, and she was admitted to a clinic because of a breakdown, but those who know her – including the produce of the show, Michael Harrison – praise her for her “remarkable” handling of her meteoric rise to stardom.
