Sour note as Susan Boyle's management team accuses her brother of cashing in on her fame
By JIM MCBETH and STUART MACDONALD
Susan Boyle’s management minders have accused her older brother of trying to cash in on her superstar status.
SuBo has agreed to ‘top the bill’ and perform two songs at the finale of a seaside variety show entitled Susan Boyle & Friends that Gerry Boyle is staging in Blackpool.
But the star’s management claimed yesterday that the promotional material for her brother’s Instant World Variety Gala gives the impression it will be a Susan Boyle ‘spectacular’.
Top of the bill: Susan Boyle has agreed to perform at her brother's seaside show
Miss Boyle, 52, of Blackburn, West Lothian, became a global phenomenon following a spectacular television debut on Britain’s Got Talent in 2009.
A management insider accused her brother of trying to take advantage of her huge success.
In a strongly worded statement, her management said: ‘This is categorically not a Susan Boyle show – and it is not part of the phenomenally successful live tour just completed in Scotland.’
A spokesman for Miss Boyle added: ‘Neither Andy Stephens Management nor Syco/Sony Music are involved or associated with this strictly one-off appearance.’
Miss Boyle’s management claimed it had acted to dispel ‘mounting confusion’ over the singer’s forthcoming appearance at Blackpool Opera House next month.
Gerry Boyle has strongly denied that there is a rift with his sister over the show, which also stars Roy Walker
The spokesman added: ‘There is no row going on between Susan and her brother, but the way it has been billed makes it look like a show in which guest artists will be coming in to duet with Susan.
‘We have been inundated with communications from fans asking if this is Susan’s live show going to Blackpool. What we do not want is her many good-hearted fans from around the world spending hundreds and hundreds of pounds on air fares and hotels and coming here in the belief they are going to get a Susan Boyle show.
‘She is doing this as a favour to her brother. It is his show, not hers, and she is singing just two songs.’
The variety act will be held at the Blackpool venue
Promotional material for the show says that comedian Roy Walker will be among those on the bill, alongside Scottish singers such as Fiona Lynch and Callum Beattie.
Last night 58-year-old Mr Boyle, who is presenting the show in partnership with Blackpool impresario Tony Jo, accused his sister’s management of bullying and ‘getting their knickers in a twist’.
The businessman, who is transforming the old Odeon cinema in Edinburgh into a Las Vegas-style dinner show venue, added: ‘They are effectively accusing me of taking advantage of my sister’s success and I would refute that robustly.
‘I would also stress that there is no rift or row between me and Susan. In fact, she rang me yesterday and she is delighted to be part of the show in Blackpool.
‘We have been upfront with her management company from the very beginning – and we have made it perfectly clear that this is not going to be a Susan Boyle “show”.
‘There are other great acts performing and Susan is going to sing at the end. It will be like the old Sunday Night at the London Palladium scenario in which the star topped the bill. But Susan’s management are being a bit bullish and they have a bit of the Big Brother attitude when it comes to Susan performing on stage.
‘We had originally hoped to stage the show at the Odeon but our plans for opening were delayed and when Tony Jo gave us the opportunity to do the show in Blackpool we were absolutely delighted.
‘I have been going to Blackpool since I was 19 years old and have a great affection for the town.
‘Susan was also delighted to go there. She said she would love to do something in Blackpool after the townspeople were so lovely to her when she visited for the unveiling of her waxwork at Madame Tussauds.
‘We have had fistfuls of emails from people wanting to buy tickets.’
