Barks: SuBo such a gentle soul

Samantha Barks has been filming with Susan Boyle
Samantha Barks has revealed she is loving working with Susan Boyle, who she describes as "a gentle soul".

Susan and Les Miserables star Samantha have been filming on location in the Isle of Man.The Britain's Got Talent star is making her movie debut in The Christmas Candle, based on a book by US preacher and author Max Lucado, and set in an 1890s English village where blessed candles answer people's prayers.
Samantha gushed: "Susan's great, she's got this really beautiful, gentle soul about her and she's lovely.
"It's been really great to see her sing, she sings a bit in the film and I don't actually sing. So it's really nice to be sat back for once watching someone else sing!"
The big freeze gripping Britain may not feel right for this time of year, but it's perfect for Samantha while they are filming the Christmas movie.
She said: "It's such a fun film, it really is. It's a Christmas film, set in the Cotswolds, which is such a beautiful part of the world. It's been snowing as well, so I feel so in the festive spirit, which is sort of wrong, but also so right. I love a bit of Christmas!"

The secret sisters: Is Lorraine Kelly turning into Susan Boyle?

One is a loveable daytime television presenter and the other the breakout star from Britain's Got Talent, having sold millions of copies of her debut album worldwide.
But it seems that Lorraine Kelly, 53, and singer Susan Boyle, 51, have more than their Scottish accents in common.
The Daily Mail has found the photographs that might prove the pair are in fact secret sisters.

    Film debut for Susan

    subo

She has sold millions of albums and has a musical stage show of her life, now Susan Boyle is to make her debut on the big screen.
The singer is filming period drama The Christmas Candle with Samantha Barks from Les Miserables. The 51-year-old singing sensation from Blackburn said: “I can’t believe I’m making a film. I’m very excited to be a part of The Christmas Candle.
“Everyone is a delight to work with. It’s a fantastic experience to be part of the team.
“I’m really enjoying getting dressed in the period costumes and stepping back in time.”
Last week the Courier revealed Susan is to be the chieftain at this year’s West Lothian Highland Games, on May 18.
Like Britain’s Got Talent runner-up SuBo, Barks found fame on a TV talent show. She was a runner-up on the BBC’s I’d Do Anything.
Sylvester McCoy, John Hannah, Barbara Flynn and James Cosmo are also in the cast. Filming started on the Isle of Man last week.

Posted on Mail Online - Les Mis thanks to SuBo

Les Mis does the biz again (and it's all thanks to SuBo)

    VARIOUS: Les Miserables (Polydor Deluxe)
    Rating: 4 Star Rating
The film has smashed box-office records and won countless awards. But  Les Misérables is now becoming an enduring pop phenomenon, too.
Thanks to a deluxe version of the album — with 22 tracks spread across two CDs — Les Mis is set to stay in the upper reaches of the album chart three months after it became the first soundtrack to hit number one since Evita, 15 years ago.
Producer Sir Cameron Mackintosh has his own theory as to the soundtrack’s success — and it’s all down to SuBo (who doesn’t even appear in the film)

One day more: Les Mis stays at the top of the album charts
One day more: Les Mis stays at the top of the album charts
‘The touchpaper was lit four years ago by Susan Boyle,’ the theatre impresario tells me. ‘When she sang I Dreamed A Dream on Britain’s Got Talent, it crossed a boundary.
A tune that had been lurking there for years started connecting with people in a non-theatrical way.

‘Instead of appealing to people who like musicals, it appealed to people who just like good music.’

The decision to record actors singing live on location for the movie was inspired. The cast could have mimed to pre-recorded tapes, but the result would have sounded staid. Instead, the live takes capture the spontaneity of the story and have a raw, emotional drive that might have been missing.
‘It’s like hearing a Beatles album,’ says Mackintosh, warming to his subject. ‘When The Beatles launched into a song, there was a great immediacy. My father was a jazz musician. He had lots of 78rpm records from the Thirties and Forties, and it felt the same listening to them.
‘You don’t get that rawness, that emotional connection, when you are listening to clean, highly polished pop songs recorded in a studio. I couldn’t have imagined doing Les Misérables on film any other way.’
The extended version works as a stand-alone album partly on the back of Claude-Michel Schonberg’s powerful, operatic score.
But its appeal is also built on outstanding vocals, with the deluxe version adding some extended choruses. It is Hugh Jackman who sets the tone: he is full-throated on Valjean’s Soliloquy, holding a single high note for ten seconds, and tender and reflective on Suddenly.
So, where does Les Mis go next? With a DVD out in May, and ten new stage productions opening around the world, the story is set to run and run.
‘We’ve been fine-tuning it for 30 years,’ says Mackintosh. ‘And we’ll never let it become a museum piece. Les Mis has become a complete brand. That’s never happened with a show before.’

Another write-up using Susan Boyle's name to get the other event out there. Too bad the writer didn't write about the mega news of Susan's debut acting role in "The Christmas Candle" which will be out in theaters Dec. 2013.   Now that is something to write about!  He did get one very good and exciting information in his report and that is about Susan working on her 5th CD.  How great is that!

Susan Boyle too busy working on new album to rock with fellow Scots

Susan Boyle rocks: Fratellis thrilled to meet the Scottish singing sensation© Deadline
Susan Boyle fans will be delighted to know that the star is currently in Glasgow working on her fifth album.
One group of men in particular were excited when they realised this was the case – The Fratellis.
The Scots rockers were rehearsing for their forthcoming tour, when they discovered Susan was in the studio next to them.
It seems they were so impressed, they asked the Britain’s Got Talent star to sing with them, but she politely declined. We’re not sure the anthemic “nanana nanana nanananana” of Chelsea Dagger would be her thing…
Barry Fratelli tweeted: “Rehearsals day 2: the legend that is Susan Boyle in the studio next door, tried to get her do BV's on dagger, she was havin none of it....”
While the Fratellis are working on their new album, which is due for release in September, Susan is expected to delight her global army of fans with her record, out later this year.
She is said to have a few tricks up her sleeve for this album, but the singing sensation is remaining tight-lipped at the moment as to who and what will feature on the release.
Self-confessed chocolate lover Susan is looking forward to Easter weekend, ahead of her birthday celebrations on Monday, when she turns 52.
She’s sure to have a little glass of lemonade (her favourite tipple) and a karaoke session down her local pub in Blackburn with her nearest and dearest to mark the big day. Happy birthday Susan.

Down memory lane. This article dates back to 2009. Interesting prospective!  To all the authorities below, let me tell you a bit about Susan's accomplishments: Susan has 4 successful CDs out with worldwide sales over 18 million and she is now working on her 5th CD, she has performed on various TV programs worldwide, has a book out, has made commercials in various countries, she sang for HRH the Queen, the Pope and performed in events in major cities all over the world, she has a successful play written about her, in which she made singing appearances as guest star, soon she will debut in her first movie role "The Christmas Candle" and, as I write, a movie is being made of her life. -  Yes,  "I think she did beautifully too.”Don’t call Susan Boyle ‘pitchy’!

Voice coaches, critics say ‘Talent’ contestant really is a talented singer

    By msnbc.com contributor
    updated 4/23/2009 12:08:45 PM ET

She's an Internet sensation, with nearly 70 million YouTube views of her TV
debut.   Susan Boyle, a frumpy, unemployed, self-confessedly virginal 47-year-
old Scots singer,  has been acclaimed as a singing wonder since her April 11
audition for the U.K. show “Britain's Got Talent.”
Boyle has a compelling story. Unmarried, living in a small village with her cat Pebbles, volunteering at her church and caring for her sick mother, she still dreamed a dream: singing before a large audience. She did, and the world was wowed.
But come on. Does she really have such a great voice, or is just the improbability of that sound coming fromthat person that's so captivating the public?
I asked a number of professional singers, critics, vocal coaches and singing teachers for their thoughts. The consensus: She really does have an exceptional voice.
“Her pitch was right on, her quality was clear and she had volume when she belted,” said Rachel York, a Los Angeles singer and actress who performed Boyle's audition piece — “I Dreamed a Dream,” from “Les Misérables” — when playing Fantine on Broadway in 1992.
Referring to another YouTube clip by Boyle, York added, “I was actually amazed listening to ‘Cry Me a River’ — she has a really nice sultry sound.
Allen Henderson, director of the 6,700-member National Association of Teachers of Singing, ticked off some of the qualities used to judge a singing voice. They include vibrato vs. straight, in tune vs. out of tune, strong vs. weak, breathy vs. clear, warm vs. cool, free vs. forced, and stylistically correct for the genre vs. incorrect.
Based on those criteria, he termed Boyle's voice “good.”
Video: Susan Boyle serenades anchor He said, “As a professional, her performance didn't blow me away, but I thought it was very good. She handled the piece very well.” He declined to offer any pointers, saying he'd need to hear more material sung in lower-pressure situations before making a further assessment.
London vocal coach Tona de Brett, who said she has worked with singers including Dido, Linda McCartney and Johnny Rotten, was more enthusiastic.
“Her breathing sounds good, her tuning is perfect, and she puts in real emotion without being overdone, which is a tremendously good thing, because so often in the pop business, the emotions are superimposed,” de Brett said. “I must say, she's got a knockout gift, a real natural gift.”
New York-based vocal teacher and therapist Joan Lader, who has worked with Madonna and Patti LuPone (LuPone played Fantine on Broadway in 1987), described Boyle's voice as “very free, unaffected and pure, with lots of clarity and range. A piece like ‘I Dreamed A Dream’ climbs, and she hit the mark. People have very specific expectations when they hear that song. She met them.”Gene Stout, editor of a blog about popular music and until March the pop critic for the now-shuttered Seattle Post-Intelligencer, called Boyle's voice “stunning — assuming her performance wasn't technically enhanced, which I think it wasn't.”
Boyle hasn't spoken much about what vocal training she's received, and her publicist didn't respond to inquiries on that topic. But her apparent lack of formal training is appealing to Eric Vetro, a Los Angeles vocal coach who said he's worked with Meatloaf, Bette Midler and The Goo Goo Dolls.
“What surprised me most was her naturalness. It wasn't that overly manufactured Broadway sound,” Vetro said. “It was a Broadway sound but with a natural feeling to it and a beautiful tone.”
OK, so Boyle has a good voice. Maybe even a great voice.
But then there's her age and appearance. She's a long way from being a young, toned, skimpily clad pop star. Hell, even opera divas are shedding their Viking helmets and looking foxy these days.
Boyle hasn't disclosed any plans for her singing future, and through her publicist she declined to be interviewed. If she does pursue a record deal or a role in a musical, what are her odds of success?
They're mixed, said several people. Everyone deplored the value typically placed on appearance. At the same time, they acknowledged it's a reality — though not insurmountable.
“There's no shortage of first-class voices out there, but Boyle has a unique story: she's unattractive,” said R.M. Campbell, a Seattle-based music critic for Northwest classical-music site The Gathering Note.
“She's a bit like Ella Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald was overweight and wore glasses — everything a woman entertainer shouldn't be,” Campbell said. “It's really, really hard to make a career if a woman isn't attractive. But Fitzgerald was a great singer and a great musician, and she rose above her physical circumstances. Her career lasted 60 years.”
Several coaches said Boyle's very ordinariness could propel her to further success.
“She's an everywoman as opposed to an untouchable fantasy goddess, so maybe that's why people react to her,” said Vetro, the L.A. vocal coach. “They say, ‘She's one of us, but look how talented she is. We want to support her’.”
Video: Susan Boyle serenades anchor Vetro pointed to singers Josh Groban and Michael Bublé as evidence that unusual or even unlikely beginnings and choices of material can lead to success.
“I can see her having one album that is successful, that people who like her voice would buy,” he said. “I don't see her as an act that would tour. And I think she should audition for Broadway or West End shows, where she could really shine.”
He foresees perhaps not lead roles for her but smaller, important singing roles, like that of Mother Abbess singing “Climb Every Mountain“ in “The Sound of Music,” or Nettie Fowler singing “June is Busting Out All Over” in “Carousel.”
“It might be a character role that needs a strong voice, maybe for one big song,” Vetro said.
Boyle is slated to sing again on “Britain's Got Talent” during the show's semifinal round, running several days during the last week in May. If she wins, Boyle will receive 100,000 pounds (roughly $145,800) and will perform for Prince Charles at the Royal Variety Show.
Whatever Boyle's future, London voice coach de Brett says she wishes her wisdom above all, and the courage to be true to herself.
“I hope she isn't swayed too much by publicity or money. I hope she's wise and has good advisers,” de Brett said. “If she's taken up by the right sort of people, I think she'll do beautifully.”
