Andy Murray and Susan Boyle inspire young singer songwriters
Primary pupils from school choirs across North Lanarkshire impressed a packed audience at this year's Celebration of Youth Music concert.
The event at Motherwell Concert Hall saw choirs from Holytown, John Paul II, Logans, St Patrick’s, St Teresa’s and St Thomas’ primary schools perform their own song about a famous Scot of their choice.
The theme of this year's concert was Scots of Success and pupils chose Andy Murray, John Higgins, Margaret McDonald, Susan Boyle, Chris Hoy, Sir Alex Ferguson, Graeme Obree and David Livingston as the inspirational Scots they wanted to write and sing about.
Each of the eight schools involved had their songs recorded on a compilation album called Scots of Success, the proceeds of which will be divided between each school’s chosen charity.
Angela Cusick, headteacher at Logans Primary School in Motherwell, said: "The children had a fabulous experience and a wonderful time on the night.
"It was the first time they had participated in this event and they really enjoyed singing in front of a packed audience and also watching the other schools involved.
"They were also involved in making the CD and this has given them lots of confidence. Well done to everyone involved in making this event such a success."
Councillor Jim Logue, convener of learning and leisure services, said: "Once again our pupils and teachers have put in a great deal of effort and hard work in preparing for the concert.
"The choirs performing represent the breadth and depth of quality we have in our schools. I would like to congratulate everyone involved in producing such professional and inspiring performances and creating such a wonderful concert."
Since its introduction in 2004, the Scottish Government’s youth music initiative has provided free music lessons to over 3500 pupils in primary and secondary schools throughout North Lanarkshire.
