Boyle shuns chips for charity
Singing sensation Susan Boyle is giving up chips for Lent.
The Scot is joining thousands of people who are giving something up for the 40 days of Lent and donating the money saved to support the Wee Box, Big Change charity appeal.
The appeal was launched today by students from Holyrood Secondary School and the Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund (SCIAF) at Merchant Square in Glasgow city centre.
Boyle said: "It makes me really sad to know that so many people in the world today are still living in terrible poverty and struggling to feed themselves.
"I know the money I save from giving up chips and donating it to SCIAF will help people in need to work their way out of a life of poverty. We can all do something to help people less fortunate than ourselves this Lent. What will you do?"
Deacon Blue, The Proclaimers, X Factor star Nicholas McDonald, Rangers manager Ally McCoist, Celtic boss Neil Lennon and broadcaster Kaye Adams have also spoken out on the issue of global hunger and called for Scots to take action this Lent.
Lennon is giving up chocolate, while Loose Women presenter Adams is shunning sugar.
The focus of this year's appeal is Colombia and the plight of the native American Embera people whose existence is under threat from big business, guerrilla fighters and paramilitaries.
Money raised from the appeal will help these people, and also in the 15 other countries where SCIAF works.
SCIAF is also asking people to look closer at their own lifestyle and ask whether they can change their behaviour to reduce the impact they have on poor countries and the environment, for instance by wasting less food, reducing energy use, or cutting down on meat.
