Susan Boyle signs up to the appeal

SUSAN Boyle yesterday gave up chips for Lent to help some of the world’s poorest people.
The superstar singer revealed her promise as the Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund (SCIAF) launched their annual Wee Box, Big Change campaign.
Other stars who pledged support include Celtic manager Neil Lennon, who will give up chocolate, and Ricky Ross of Deacon Blue, who will ditch red meat.
Rangers boss Ally McCoist, X Factor finalist Nicholas McDonald, The Proclaimers and broadcaster Kaye Adams backed the appeal.

SCIAF support people in 15 of the poorest countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
Susan, from Blackburn, West Lothian, said: “I know the money I save from giving up chips and donating it to SCIAF will help people in need to work their way out of a life of poverty.

“We can all do something to help people less fortunate than ourselves this Lent.”

Lennon said: “Global poverty and hunger are big challenges but they can be overcome and we can all do our bit.”

McCoist will do a 24-hour fast. He said: “We sometimes take what we have for granted. I do this for SCIAF every year.”

Ross said: “It’s a travesty that in 2014, so many women, men and children are going without food, clean water and somewhere safe and dry to live.”

People are encouraged to take part by giving up something during the 40 days of Lent and donating the money saved to SCIAF at Easter.

The Record recently travelled with the charity to Colombia, the focal point of the 2014 campaign.

Violence, land-grabs and the drugs trade have displaced a staggering 5.6million people.
