More children know Susan than Scott
SCOTTISH children recognise singer Susan Boyle ahead of leading historical figures.
A survey of youngsters, aged between five and 16, found almost half had no idea who Sir Walter Scott was, with some thinking he was an actor or pop star.
The results came in a survey commissioned by Buccleuch Estates in Scotland, to find out what children knew about their heritage.
Buccleuch marketing manager Lucy Laidlaw said: "Scotland has a tremendously exciting history. So it is shocking to uncover that the likes of Susan Boyle and Emeli Sandé are more recognisable than some of the country's most prolific and
impactful figures."
When shown pictures of Scottish figures, 27% of children opted for Robert Burns as the "most recognisable".
But more youngsters chose Susan Boyle and Emeli Sandé ahead of William Wallace and Bonnie Prince Charlie.
