Susan Boyle stuns with Su-perb opening night of tour in Inverness
It was the night Susan Boyle fans had been waiting for: the opening show of her first solo tour... and she didn’t disappoint.
Eight hundred fans, some from as far afield as America and Australia, packed the Eden Court Theatre in Inverness to watch Susan finally get the chance to unleash her talents on a scale never seen before, as she launched into an incredible 24-song set.
The Blackburn singer shot to fame on Britain’s Got Talent back in 2009 but, despite going on to create record breaking albums and perform for the likes of the Pope and the Queen, she had never had her own solo show – until now.
After two songs from Lance Ellington, a regular vocalist on Strictly Come Dancing, Susan appeared. In silhouette, she stood at the back of the stage while the audio from her first Britain’s Got Talent audition was played – a fitting reminder of how far she has come.
Then, with a glimpse of her famous wiggle, the audience couldn’t contain their excitement any longer and gave Susan the first standing ovation of the night. There were plenty more of these to come.
As the lights came up and Susan made her way through the ten-piece band on stage, dressed in an eye-catching, floor-length dark grey sequinned gown with a grey shawl, she delivered a heartfelt rendition of Out Here on My Own.
Finally, Susan was achieving a life-long ambition to be out on stage on her own, showcasing the music she loves, and you could tell she was relishing every moment. As she said: “This song is about a wee lassie who goes on an incredible journey – I can relate to that.
“I hope tonight to take you all on a journey.”
From there she delighted the crowd with a host of tracks, including a beautiful version ofSomewhere Over the Rainbow, before moving into a jazz section, where she took a seat to deliver classics including That Ole Devil Called Love and Cry Me a River, of which she had made a very early recording before she shot to BGT fame.
This section showcased another side to Susan’s vocal skills and showed she’s capable of much more than just belting out show tunes.
The Scots singing sensation rounded off the first half with a powerful version of “the best torch song ever” – As Long as He Needs Me, before sending everyone singing to the bar by delivering a rousing rendition of You Raise Me Up, complete with impressive backing vocals from the choir from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. For this song, Susan also made her second change of the evening, into a delicate purple gown with jewelled cape over the top – the second of four changes throughout the evening.
During the first half of the concert, Susan’s cheeky sense of humour shone through as she told jokes about her cat Pebbles and her old pal/boss Simon Cowell.
These were ramped up in the second half when she had the crowd in stitches with her impersonation of Simon, Piers Morgan and Amanda Holden during her BGT audition, complete with impressive English accents. That lady certainly has got talent.
Dressed in a silver sparkly frock, Susan also made reference to the people who doubted she would ever amount to anything when she was young. She said: “There were people who told me I couldn’t do anything,” before she smiled and sang “na na na nana na!”
Susan added: “I never tend to do anything I am told so here I am now singing for you.” There’s no better way to make her doubters eat their words.
Part two’s tracks included Perfect Year, a much-loved cover of Adele’s Make You Feel My Love and an emotional version of Rabbie Burns’ Ae Fond Kiss, which Susan dedicated to everyone who had lost someone in their lives. She was joined by Lance Ellington for duets of All I Ask of You, This is the Moment and River Deep Mountain High, which had the audience standing up and dancing along.
After a quick change into a gold-sequinned gown, the golden girl of the evening returned for her grand finale of You’ll Never Walk Alone, Who I Was Born to Be and, you guessed it, I Dreamed a Dream – the song Susan joked “has got me into a lot of trouble.” It’s the track that kick-started her career and in four years she has come such a long way.
Susan appeared relaxed, confident and, perhaps most importantly, to be having the time of her life throughout her two-hour long concert and that clearly rubbed off on the thrilled audience.
Largely made up of a more mature crowd, the fans couldn’t get enough of her honest and moving showcase and they hung on her every word, cheering and standing up whenever they could, whilst mindful not to detract or distract while Susan was performing.
With her voice sounding better than ever, and with the charm the world fell in love with back in 2009 serving to deliver just the right touch of humour to the show, anyone who has snapped up a ticket to the rest of Susan’s Scottish tour dates is in for a treat. If the reaction to last night’s concert is anything to go by, it doesn’t look like it will be long before ‘Susan Boyle in concert’ hits the road to wow her army of fans throughout the world.
