On stage with a Subo-star
A KIRKCALDY teenager is currently hitting a high note in his musical career by peforming in the choir on Susan Boyle’s Scottish tour.
Robert Forrest (19), who has just completed his first year of a Bachelor of Music degree in vocal studies at the prestigious Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow, has already done three shows with the popular Scottish singer.
And he is looking forward to singing in the final two nights of her sell out tour in Edinburgh tomorrow (Friday) and Saturday.
Robert, a former pupil of Balwearie High School, became a member of the 25-strong backing choir after replying to an email sent to the Conservatoire asking for volunteers.
As part of the choir he performs in four songs at each of the shows, including Susan’s signature song ‘I Dreamed A Dream’ which she wowed the country with at her ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ audition.
“It has been a really good experience to be a part of,” said Robert, whose parents live in Kirkcaldy’s James Grove.
“The choir are a mixed bunch, with people from America and all over Scotland who are studying at the Conservatoire.
“We don’t get to see a lot of Susan Boyle, but we have had a few brief chats and she is really nice – the audiences love her.
As well as singing in the choir, Robert is busy rehearsing for his lead role in ‘Phantom of the Opera’ with the Youth Music Theatre of Scotland, which his mum Janet Robertson, is a creative director of.
“It is a busy time, but I really enjoy it,” said Robert, who was born in Cambridge but moved here when he was 12.
Robert started off playing violin, but always loved singing and was a member of the Bel Canto Voices in Kirkcaldy when he was younger.
“I went to Aberdeen City Music School originally as a violinist, but decided to switch to singing as I enjoyed it more,” he explained.
“I am classically trained and do a lot of opera singing, but I enjoy singing all different styles.
“I have performed in a few bigger venues but nothing as extensive as this. It is very different to what I have been used to before now and being involved in this kind of professional environment has been a great
