Susan Boyle Exclusive Interview Backstage at Kings Theatre Glasgow

Susan Boyle backstage in Glasgow: tour joy and Simon Cowell impression

In recent months, I have had the pleasure of interviewing Susan Boyle on a few occasions, as she embarked on her first solo tour.
From watching her put the finishing touches to her 24-song set during rehearsals in Glasgow, to stunning the crowds on her opening night at the Eden Court Theatre in Inverness, it has been a real treat to watch Susan’s journey culminate in an incredible show, which has seen her win rave reviews.
When I chatted to the Scottish singing sensation in Inverness, she couldn’t wait to get back onstage, feeding off the thrill of doing her show, her way and silencing any doubters who thought she couldn’t sustain a full set on her own.
She did that, and then some!
Susan indicated that Glasgow was going to be a particular highlight of the tour so I was thrilled to be invited to catch up with her backstage after the concert to find out if the experience had lived up to her expectations.
After receiving numerous standing ovations from the extremely vocal crowd, and reducing many (including my wee mum) to tears with her heartfelt performance, Susan looked as cool and calm as ever backstage, taking her various meet & greets with Scottish celebrities in her stride.
Dressed in a stunning ruby red gown – a change from Inverness when she finished in a gold sequins number – Susan told me she felt “pretty energised, pretty buzzing really.”
I was exhausted just watching her romp her way through the set of musical, Sixties and jazz numbers, including wiggles, dance moves and four outfit changes. But Susan? She seemed unfazed. It’s clearly what she was born to do.
I wanted to know why playing Glasgow was so important to the star, who hails from Blackburn.
She told me: “Glasgow seems more of a home town and I’m from the west myself, so I’m more at home in Glasgow.
“It was an electrifying audience – it’s a good feeling to get a good reaction like that.”
Following the largely fantastic reaction the concerts have received from fans and journalists alike, Susan was keen to ensure that the entire team involved takes credit for the success.
She said: “It feels pretty good but it’s not just my effort, I’m just the singer. It’s a team effort. It’s the musical director who puts the music together, it’s the director, it’s the backing singers, it’s the whole package. You’re not just getting an act, you’re getting a full show with a lot of hard work put into it.”
Susan may be the star of the show but part of her star quality comes from the fact she remains humble and extremely grateful to the team around her.
She was also keen to praise the choir from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, who join her on stage for songs including You’ll Never Walk Alone and, her signature tune, I Dreamed a Dream.
As if hearing Susan’s powerful vocals deliver these tracks wasn’t enough, the choir add depth to the performance and perfectly complement their leading lady.
Susan clearly loves having the students on stage with her as she said: “It gives it a backbone, a fatter texture if you like, and you don’t feel so alone on stage then. It’s a great feeling. They’re all very professional at what they do.”
In Inverness, the talented singer said that Ae Fond Kiss was one of her favourite tracks in the show. In Glasgow, she added that The Way We Were was also special because “it’s reflective” and That Ole Devil Called Love is one she really loves.
Susan’s family and friends were heading along to watch her in Glasgow on Tuesday night and they would undoubtedly be proud of what she has achieved.
She noted that her father would also have been extremely pleased to know that she had realised her dream of becoming a professional singer – a dream he shared.
Susan joked that growing up her family were like the von Trapps from The Sound of Music and that her dad was always having to tell her to shut her bedroom door to drown out the singing!
I’m sure my own family can relate to that!
Susan’s dressing room was covered in flowers, with the largest bunch of all coming from her record label, Syco.
While I would be rendered speechless (a rarity) if Simon Cowell picked up the phone to wish me luck, Susan just views him as the boss and didn’t dwell on the fact he had called to wish her luck on the first night.
Then, just as she does in the concert, she launched into a hilarious impression of the music mogul. We would love to know what Simon Cowell thinks of her cheeky take on his voice...
Susan’s first solo show comes to an end of its Scottish run this weekend, so what can fans expect next?
Well, there’s the fifth album to look forward to and the prospect of the show going further afield, but, for now, Susan is concentrating on getting ready to wow the Edinburgh crowds, before taking a well-deserved holiday, where she plans to read books in the sun and relax.
During her days off from the tour, Susan managed to get swept up in Murray mania, watching her fellow Scot win the Wimbledon final.
When asked if she had been shouting at the TV, she laughed: “I think everybody was!”
Sadly I won’t be able to make Susan’s final shows in Edinburgh this week, due to T in the Park, but after watching legends like Bruce Forsyth and Kenny Rogers take to the stage at Glastonbury, I wondered if Susan would ever consider getting up on the main stage at T in Balado?
She chuckled at the thought, but said: “I don’t know if I would be the right age for it, but I would consider it. We’ll see, we’ll see.”
You can watch the full interview in the player above but all I can say is it truly has been an honour to spend time with Susan and watch her take to the stage and blow the audience away, like I’ve never seen anyone do before.
It’s no wonder the Boyle-brigade of lovely ladies (and gents) travel from far and wide to watch her perform – next time I think I’ll enjoy them. Enjoy your Edinburgh shows, Susan. x
