Susan Boyle: ‘My BGT audition was completely unplanned’
She’s the singing sensation who became an overnight global star, thanks to the most memorable BGT audition yet. Yes, it’s the inimitable Susan Boyle.
Since appearing on BGT, the Highland lassie has sold 14 million albums worldwide, sung in front of a TV audience of half a billion in China and lived a lifestyle she always dreamt of. Here, Susan spills the beans on fame, fans and her feelings about the Judges.
'Fess up, who was your fave Judge?
Simon, Piers and Amanda were so supportive when I appeared on the show. I couldn't possibly have a favourite. Although, Piers is very special to me and to this day continues to be my biggest supporter.
What about this year’s panel?
I wish Alesha luck and hope she enjoys herself. She is a talented lady and I think she will do very well.
Amanda told us your voice gives her goose bumps…
Amanda is a lovely lady and she was very kind to me when I was on the show. I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate her on the birth of her new baby girl.
Take us back to your life-changing audition…
My nerves were pretty jangled, when I went on stage my knees were knocking but I decided you either show nerves or you get cheeky with it – I opted for the latter. I introduced myself as Susan Boyle and that I’d like to be a professional singer like Elaine Paige. That was immediately met with laughter and then I began to sing.
And what a voice, eh…
Without blowing my own trumpet too much I got a standing ovation, it was so exhilarating and I didn’t imagine I’d get that reaction. Everything I said to the Judges was completely unplanned, I have no idea where all that carrying on and the swagger came from!
300 million people watched you on YouTube, what’s that feel like?
It was three years ago and I'm still trying to come to terms with it.
What about your fans, do you ever get bombarded buying a pint of milk?
In my hometown I'm still just Susan, I can walk to the shops and no one bothers me. I have wonderful neighbours and friends and life is exactly the same. That said, the fans are amazing and the mail I have received is phenomenal. I get sent beautiful gifts including books, toiletries and even a vintage dress from the 1950’s that had been in a family for generations and they wanted me to have it.
What advice would you give to this year’s Finalists?
Follow your dream and definitely do not give up. For those in the Live Shows, just enjoy the great experience.
Finally, what are you up to at the moment?
I'm coming up with ideas for my next album and I will also be making special guest appearances at the I Dreamed A Dream musical, which is based on my life story. It begins at the end of this month.
