SUSAN BOYLE'S life story premieres at Newcastle's Theatre Royal this month. So of course, she chose to give an exclusive interview to Entertainment Editor Gordon Barr.
GLOBAL superstar Susan Boyle today told of her pride at her musical life story being premiered on Tyneside.
In an exclusive interview with the Chronicle, Susan, who will be making guest appearances at the end of shows, said she was delighted Newcastle will see her give her first British performances since Britain’s Got Talent three years ago.
I Dreamed A Dream premieres at the Theatre Royal in Newcastle later this month, produced by Wallsend-born Michael Harrison.
And Susan, 50, revealed how it was only because Michael was producing and Elaine C Smith starring that she gave it the thumbs up, and
praised Geordie duo Ant and Dec, who she said gave her big support when she took to the Britain’s Got Talent stage.
“Michael is a lovely man,” Susan told me, as we sat down for a chat in Glasgow with Elaine C Smith shortly after I was given an exclusive sneak preview of rehearsals for the new musical.
“Michael is the only person to be doing this as I know with his expertise it will go well. His reputation lies before him.
The company are very good so I don’t need to worry.
“It seems a bit surreal because an ordinary person like me doesn’t think she has much to offer.
“But I think when you see it on stage played by professional actors and people like Elaine it becomes entertaining and the reality takes over then.
“It’s got a bit of sadness in it, but it makes you laugh.”
Susan was on fine form as I met her with Elaine. Chatty and funny, the pair have a great rapport and, having seen Elaine rehearse one of the most touching scenes in the musical, it proves Susan right: the Scottish actress was the perfect person to portray her.
She also admitted she was excited at the prospect of performing at the end of each show from March 23 to 31.
It will be her first British public performances since the Britain’s Got Talent tour three years ago. Susan said: “I’m looking forward to seeing them all, giving them back something and endorsing the musical.
“I’m excited as it’s a new project. It’s also new ground. It was the idea of the whole journey and it’s still continuing and you have to get the balance right. I’m always game for a laugh.
